  • Top 5 Penn basketball plays of the week: Harvard and Dartmouth edition

    content_img

It was an up-and-down weekend across the Penn basketball world. While the men were swept by Dartmouth and Harvard in a disappointing road trip, the women pushed their Ivy League winning streak to seven games by locking down the Palestra in two dominant wins. Here are the plays that made our top five.

Penn women’s basketball came out of the gate firing in its win over the Crimson on Saturdayn his work goes underappreciated. He told the Brighton website, "I think it is more of an up-and-down position than anywhere else on the pitch, for the reasons I've mentioned."If you look at someone like Mo Salah at Liverpool, he has been unbelievable. The Quakers opened the game on a 12-0 run. Setting the tone for this early momentum was senior guard Kendall Grasela, who took a fast break layup all the way to the hoop using a Euro step to get around the Harvard defender.&mdashJesus to Real Madrid. The 17 year-old attacker, according to Madrid press, is joining Real this month for an initial fee of €30m.However, Jorge Jesus has rubbished the claims given the price mentioned. He declared, “Reinier cannot be sold for €30; Penn WBB (@PennWBB)

Later on in the Quakers early run against Harvard, with the team leading 17-4, junior center Eleah Parker found herself at the top of the key. Typically known for her skills in the paint, Parker pruca Vialli is delighted to be getting involved with Stevenage Borough.Through Tifosy, where Vialli is a director, the Italian is now working with the League Two outfit."At my age today, my excitement comes from the possibility of investing in a club oved that she could also facilitate. The center fired a nifty bounce pass through traffic to a cutting Phoebe Sterba who finished in the lane.

While men’s basketball looked out of sorts all game in its loss to Dartmouth, the Red and Blue went on an early 11-4 run to spoil Dartmouth’s early lead. Capping this early comeback effort was the effort of senior point guard Devon Goodman, who took the ball away from Dartmouth to launch a fast break and slam it home.

After disappointing on Friday, the Quakers were able to hang with Harvard for much of Saturday’s contest, even taking a lead into the locker room at halftime. One of the key plays in building this first half momentum occurred with just over four minutes to go in the half. After an AJ Brodeur screen knocked down the Harvard defender, freshman Jordan Dingle pulled up from the three point range. Despite getting knocked over, the freshman was able to connect on his deep ball setting up a four point play.

It was an all around stellar weekend for Eleah Parker, who tallied back to back double-doubles en route to winning Big 5 player of the week. Parker’s strong performance was not just a result of her offensive ability, as the center also chipped in on the defensive end, tallying four blocks across the two games. Parker’s best rejection of the weekend came in the second game versus Dartmouth, where the junior's block sent the ball flying into the first few rows of the stands.

As Penn football bids adieu to its senior class, there will be a new set of incoming freshmen in the class of 2023 to fill its place.

The Red and Blue will welcome 33 new players to the team this August. Overall, th refused to rule out a return to Newcastle United. With the Magpies having a vacancy in the managerial position after the departure of Rafa Benitez, Barton has been linked to the role.He is currently at Fleetwood Town, where he helped them to 11th plae split between offensive and defensive players is almost even, with 18 defensive players and 14 offensive players. There will be one punter joining the team.

The most represented positional groups are the linebackers and defensive linemen with seven newcomers each.

The 33 new players represent 16 states, with four each coming from , Pennsylvania and Virginia.

Four of the new Quakers have a familial connection to Penn football through their fathers who played for the Red and Blue a generation ago. One, local Ben Gerber, who hails from the Haverford School, is the third generation of Penn football players in his family. Gerber, who is also the lone quarterback in the class, will follow in his father and grandfather's footsteps.

Two of the new recruits, punter Ben Krimm and linebacker/lineman Ryan Mannelly, both have a family member who played in the NFL.

Three of the 33 will be playing with a former high school teammate. Defensive lineman Grant Ristoff will be playing with five other players from his high school, JSerra Catholic in California.

The class of 2023 brings leadership experience to Penn, as 28 of the 33 players served as team captains for their respective high school teams.

“I think having to hold yourself to a high standard helped prepare me. College is more difficult than high school, so having to be held to a really high standard at high school will help me get more used to the high standards at college,” defensive back Miles Thompson said.

While coach Ray Priore and the Quakersar Solskjaer as manager.Despite United's torrid end to the campaign, Nani believes Solskjaer can guide the club back to glory. The Orlando City ace, who spent eight years at Old Trafford, said: “He's been there in the past.He told Omnisport: "Obviou have plenty to advertise to new recruits, at least one member of the class of 2023 was sold by the family culture.

“The moment I realized that Penn was the place that I wanted to be, I was on a game day visit. I went down to the field after one of the games to shake the hand of one of the coaches, and I remember seeing one of the coaches go up and give a hug to one of the moms of [a] player. I remember seeing that and being like 'it’s a family.' It is a lot different than a lot of other places I’ve been to. And that is something that I want to be a part of,” offensive lineman JC Dobis said.

One of Penn’s new players is from another institution. Wide receiver Owen Goldsberry will be arriving in Philadelphia after spending the 2018 season on the Michigan Wolverines scout team.

Priore will look to fill the large gap left by the graduation of offensive lineman . Five new offensive lineman — the most of any offensive position group — will join the competition for the position in the fall.

“I think everyone’s goal coming in is playing, contributing as much as possible, so that’s obviously something that I want to do," Dobis said. "It is something that I have been working for since my senior high school season ended. Just being able to compete so that is the goal.”

This class of 2023 is setting its goals very high, and the Red and Blue will look get the most out of their new players. The Quakers will hope to rebound from last season and bring home their third Ivy League championship in the Ray Priore era.

“[One of the] team goals is to win the Ivy League Championship because I have heard that Penn has a winning tradition in the Ivy League, and it would be great to carry on that tradition. Personally, for me, [my goal is to be] working my hardest and doing whatever I can to help out the team,” outside linebacker Jake Gonzalez said.

These incoming freshmen are ready for August. Football season can’t come soon enough.

“I am super excited to get up there and get to work, get on campus and become a part of the culture,” Dobis said.

At around 3:30 a.m. at a Wawa adjacent to Princeton's campus, Cannady allegedly swung at a campus police officer, according to a statement from the Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office.

Cannady leads the Tigers in scoring, averaging 19.5 points through 12 games this season, including a combined 32 from the team’s this past winter break. In both matchups, Cannady spent every minute of game time on the court as a focal point of tanchester United legend Gary Neville is hoping Liverpool will clinch the title on March 14 or April 4.Neville will not be in the Sky Sports commentary box when Liverpool face Manchester City or Southampton, which means his reaction to United's rivalshe Princeton game plan.

The Tigers lead the Ivy League with a 2-0 record, but won't play another conference gamrm Sportsbet.io as their new shirt sponsor, reports, /.The three-year deal, which has been labelled as the largest partnership in the club's history, will see Sportsbet.io replace online broker FxPro on the front of the Premier League outfit's home ae until February. • New faces share spotlight in Penn women's soccer wins

    content_img

Three games into Nicole Van Dyke’s tenure, Penn women’s soccer is firing on all cylinders. And to hear her players tell it, most of the credit should go to the first-year coach.

After their 3-0 victory over Mount St. Mary’s Sunday at Rhodes Field, the Red and Blue were all smiles as they congratulated each other and Van Dyke.

“She’s what makes our team,” senior midfielder Erin Mikolai said of her new coach. “Our wins are accredited to her. She constantly pushes us every game and every practice.”

That’s high praise, especially considering how well-liked coach Darren Ambrose was during his stint with the Quakers (3-0). But given the undeniab first choice at right back, and Semedo may want to move on to seek regular first team football.Sport claims reports that Semedo is free to leave, even though Barca would prefer to keep him as a squad player. He has been linked to Manchester United, aly positive atmosphere surrounding Sunday’s matchup with Mount St. Mary’s (0-6), it isn’t necessarily surprising.

The party got started 14:23 into the first half when sophomore Darby Mason launched a beautiful corner kick to the head of senior Paige Lombard, who spedacross the box and promptly put the ball in the back of the net from 10 yards out. It was the first assist of Mason’s collegiate career and was Lombard’s first goal at Penn since transferring from Miami.

After the goal, Lombard was jumping with joy. She missed all of last season to injury, and her teammates mobbed her to join in the celebration.

It would become an entire afternoon of firsts for the Quakers. And perhaps none were more exciting than those sophomore Farah Otero-Amad provided.

The forward was clearly the player of the game. She dominated play in the offensive half and was constantly chasing down passes and winning 50/50 balls away from defenders.

Her play wouldn’t go unnoticed or unrewarded. In a spanjust over one minute, Otero-Amad notched both her first collegiate assist and goal.

Her assist came first, on a cross from the left that she delivered to the feet of Mikolai who pushed the ball past the keeper in the 27th minute. Just over a minute later, Otero-Amad fired a shot of her own between the pipes to stretch the Quakers’ lead to three.

All game, coaches and players could be heard yelling her name in congratulations after great runs and plays. Otero-Amad attributed this to Van Dyke’s game plan, which she seemed to take to heart.

“We had a lot of time and space on the field,” she said. “Our coach told us to be aggressive, so we took opportunity of the flanks and getting down line.”

Of course, no one was more proud of the youngsters than Van Dyke herself.

“Everything we’ve asked of them, they’ve done,” she said of the group. “They continually try to lean and grow. Very, very coachable.

“They’ve definitely been impacting the game on the field,” she added. “And it’s equated in some tremendous game-winning goals.”

Friday night against Temple, it was freshman midfielder Allie Trzaska who provided the game-winning goal in the 23rd minute after sophomore forward Natasha Davenport slammed in her first collegiate goal just three minutes into the contest between Big 5 foes.

One thing that Van Dyke hopes to improve upon heading into the Quakers’ tilt with No. 10 Clemson on Fridaynders isn't fazing him.The United winger was the victim of such rough treatment in Thursday's 2-1 win against Tottenham that Mauricio Pochettino was moved to apologise for his team's behaviour.James' searing pace also saw him singled out in earlier t in South Carolina is capitalizing on after defeat at Brighton.Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld have all been linked with moves away in the summer but none of those outgoings came to fruition, leaving their Spurs careers in limbo.Jenas said: "I love Mauricio and remore of their scoring chances. While the Red and Blue got off to great starts in both games this weekend, they didn’t score after the 28th minute in either game.

Nevertheless, Van Dyke is undeniablyhappy with how her squad is performing.

“I think the results are awesome,” she said. “But more importantly we’re just getting better and that’s what we wanna see.”

  • Wrestling | Sinfully good field at Vegas invite

    content_img

For senior 149-pounder Cesar Grajales and the Penn wrestling team, what happens in Vegas hopefully won't stay in Vegas.

Grajales and the Quakers (1-1) expect their experience against top-flight competition at this weekend's Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational to r Fedor Chalov has confirmed Crystal Palace are keen.Sandor Varga admits he's held talks with Palace manager Roy Hodgson about a deal this week for Chalov. However, Palace's £14m offer fell short of CSKA's valuation. He told Sport-Express: "Yes, he ccarry over later in the season.

"We might only see these type of guys here [at] this tournament," Grajales said. "It could come into effect later when qualifying [for the NCAA tournament] comes into play."

The invitational's field includes six ranked teams from the powerhouse Big Ten, including No. 12 Michigan, who beat the Red and Blue, 22-15, in a dual match earlier this season. Other top teams include No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Cornell, No.7 Illinois, No. 8 Minnesota, No. 10 Lehigh, No. 11 Wisconsin, No. 14 Boise State and No. 19 Indiana.

With all that in mind, No. 23 Penn is more worried about double-leg takedowns than doubling down as they spend the next two days in Sin City.

The Red and Blue are looking to improve on their 14th place finish from last year, which was highlighted by 125-pound junior Rollie Peterkin battling back from a semifinal loss to capture third place in his weightclass.

"I think we're going to do a lot better," Peterkin said. "We have Matt Dragon back."

t on Monday at Wolves.United go into the game on the back of victory over Chelsea."They were two tough games last season, we knew that because they are so hard to break down, they lie low, defend deep and are very good at counter-attacking," SolskjaeDragon - currently ranked 17th by the National Wrestling Coaches Association at 157 pounds - missed all of last season after taking a medical redshirt because of shoulder surgery.

So far this season, Dragon is undefeated and looking quite fresh.

And the Quakers know that to "do a lot better," they're going to have to keep their minds off of the craps tables and on the task at hand.

Indeed, coacharson was left delighted with their emphatic 3-0 defeat of Aston Villa on Saturday. The Hornets were leading through Troy Deeney's goal shortly before the interval, but Adrian Mariappa's sending off for two bookable offences could have proved a big tu Rob Eiter and his team have no delusions about why they're flying out to Las Vegas on the University's dollar.

"They know what they're going out there for," Eiter said. "It's not a vacation."

    Peterkin, currently ranked sixth, concurs.

"At a wrestling tournament, it's really a single-track mind," he said. "All business."

Peterkin and the Quakers are in the business of winning, and business is going to be good.

    At least, Peterkin thinks so.

"I'm definitely looking to win it," he boldly proclaimed. "There's no reason that I shouldn't."

Whether he should or not, Peterkin has reason to be humble: he lost, 10-4, to Michigan's Michael Watts during the teams' dual meet on Nov. 22. Watts, ranked No. 13 nationally at 125 pounds, will be one of Peterkin's toughest obstacles, along with No. 1 Angel Escobedo of Indiana.

The Quakers might need some help from Lady Luck if they plan to triumph over the stacked deck of competition.

But the Quakers welcome the opportunity to face the nation's toughest grapplers.

    Just ask Eiter.

"In order to be the best, you gotta wrestle the best," he said. "And beat them."

  • Appell off to hot start in minors

    content_img

After pitching 7 2/3 scoreless innings to start his professional career, Josh Appell finally gave up a run in the top of the seventh Tuesday night, raising his previously perfect ERA to 1.17.

Appell entered his first Gulf Coast League game on July 14. It was a perfect day in Port St. Lucie, Fla., 85 degrees and sunny. Appell's pitching performance was nearly perf is reward for his work in preseason.Shaw won the title at the club's awards night last night. He said, “That's one of the main things you need to do here. You've probably heard the manager say that a lot of times. Hard work beats talent if talent dect as well.

Entering in the fifth inning with one out and one man on base, Appell proceeded to shut down the rookie-league Nationals. He struck out three and walked one in one inning of no-hit relief.

Unfortunately for his Mets, Appell's performance was not enough to escape a 5-4 loss.

Last Wednesday Appell again dominated the Nationals' affiliate. In the bottom of the ninth, after his teammate, pitcher Michael Battista, gave up five runs in the first third of the inning, Appell was called in to the game.

He quickly struck out the next two batters to keep the game tied, sending it into extra innings. He returned to pitch a perfect tenth inning with two ground-outs and a strikeout.

When the Mets scored four runs in the eleventh to take the lead, Appell threw another scoreless inning to earn his first win as a professional baseball player. In the eleventh, Appell walked the leadoff man before getting the next batter to ground into a double play. Appell wrapped up his first win by getting the last batter to hit a pop-up.

A few nights after earning his first win, Appell was put into the game with an opportunity to pick up the first save of his pro career. He was sent in to pitch the ninth inning of Saturday's game against the Dodgers' rookie affiliate with the Mets leading 6-4. Appell retired the side in order, picking up a strikeout on the way to earning the first save of his career.

Appell seemsane admits he responds to the man-management of Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.Speaking to the official Liverpool FC magazine, Mamed Premier League champions at Goodison Park.If Manchester City were to lose another game between now and March 16 and the Reds kept their winning streak going, then they could be crowned champions just across Stanley Park."Liverpool is going to winne reserved praise for Klopp, who signed the Senegalese from Southampton in a £34million deal in June 2016.He said: "(He) a to have grown comfortable in his new number 43 Mets jersey, having given up only two hits, two walks and one run in four appearances as of last night.

Appell was very excited about his performance so far and his first win.

"I just want to build confidence and have coaches have confidence in me," he said.

He says he is enjoying his role as a reliever-- coming into the game and having to understand the exact situation at hand.

"I like the pressure," he said.

Against the Gulf Coast League Marlins in the second half of a doubleheader, Appell went 1 2/3 perfect innings before giving up a double in the seventh inning and a run on a later wild pitch, ending both his hitless and scoreless streak.

Nevertheless, Appell still earned his second win in the game, keeping his overall record squeaky clean.

Appell's hot start has done nothing to diminish his hopes. Yet Appell understands that "baseball is a very humbling game," and realizes the necessity to "take every day at a time."

So far however, each day of Appell's minor league experience has been everything he expected and more.

"I knew that I was going to appreciate every little thing that came my way," Appell said. "I am having the time of life."

Whoever finds the costume will receive a case of mustard a month. A case has 12 bottles. The mustards are all-natural and gluten-free and come in five different flavors: Sweet 'n' Fancy Yellow, Stone Ground Deli, Zesty Horseradish, Sweet 'n' Spicy Honey, and American Dijon.

I'm not a mustard guy, but this is very clearly serious business. There is an Italian sausage on the loose in greater Milwaukee and the perpetrator must be brought to justice. Or the sausage has to be returned, one or the other.

We were kind of hijacked by PineTarGate, but there were still 15 games Wednesday night. Let's get to it.

D-Backs starting pitcher got the win after allowing nine hits and six earned runs in six innings. So ... let's check out the overwhelming support he was provided by his teammates: Six singles, four doubles, six home runs (including onager Dean Smith has backed Jack Grealish to find some form. The midfielder and Villa captain has struggled to play at his highest level so far this season."There will be more to come from Jack. He wants to get better. You end up sometimes dragging hime of the inside-the-park variety), 14 runs, two walks and only three men left on base. weeps. It's interesting how all the comments about the Nats "rushing" Strasburg back from Tommy John surgery for a few innings late last season have disappeared. Where did all those medical experts go? Strasburg went out and stopped the Nationals' four-game losing streak Wednesday night with a solid, seven-inning effort. Notable here, other than breaking that losing streak, was Strasburg striking out 10. He now leads the majors with 110 strikeouts in just 84 innings. And he's 9-1 with a 2.46 ERA. The Cardinals have been struggling for a while. Still, after building up a 20-11 start, they had some leeway to play with in order to stay above .500. And they just keep finding ways to do so. They have now hit .500 exactly three times. Each time, they won the next game. This time out, Westbrook threw a complete game with zero earned runs (one total run, so no shutty) against the red-hot , securing a 3-1 victory. The Rockies' broadcast summed it up pretty well right after this thing ended: "And the Rockies are inventing ways to lose." This time around, they took a ninth-inning lead and sent closer to the hill to nail down the save. He got two outs and then the demise began. singled before a double tied the game. After the game, Helton told reporters he thought the ball would get through the infield and he was late to the bag, calling it an "inexcusable" error on his part (). In giving up four home runs, Hughes tried to take the AL "lead," if not for of the allowing five to the aforementioned Diamondbacks. Both had coughed up 15 gopher balls this season and the AL lead was 18 entering Wednesday. In Hughes' case, he gave up six earned runs in just 4 1/3 innings and the Yankees lost a series for the first time in June. Speaking of long balls, Arroyo gave up an astonishing 46 last season, to "lead" the majors. He still trails and teammate this season in the NL, but -- after allowing two homers to the Wednesday night -- Arroyo has coughed up two homers in each of his last three starts and 13 bombs in his last 10 starts overall. On top of that, with Wednesday's loss -- in which Arroyo allowed eight hits and five earned runs in just four innings -- the Reds have been swept by the Indians. The were 5-23 in June last season. The skid cost manager Edwin Rodriguez his job and the Marlins any shot of contending in 2011. This time around, Ozzie Guillen is surely safe, but the Marlins can ill-afford the same type of month during the first season in their shiny, new yard. After getting crushed Wednesday night in Boston, the Marlins are now 4-13 in June this season. They could certainly use a win Thursday night, when (4-5, 3.92) starts against (0-2, 5.73) and the in Boston. The controversy started Tuesday night and carried over into Wednesday with . Both the and Nats have won a game in the series, so we head to the rubber match. The Rays send (4-5, 4.16) to the hill while the Nationals counter with (8-3, 2.52).
