  • Penn wrestling winning ways, sweeps pair of duels

    content_img

Last weekend, No. 8 Nebraska knocked Penn wrestling to the floor in front of a massive crowd in Lincoln.

This weekend, the Quakers picked themselves up and walked away victorious in duals with Binghamton and Bucknell.

“We had to bounce back from a pretty tough loss the weeke African Cup of Nations campaign.Bolasie was farmed out on loan to Aston Villa and then Anderlecht last season, after missing a huge chunk of his Everton career with an ACL injury.Bolasie said: "Logically, if I really wanted to thinkis on his way to Paris Saint Germain. The 19-year-old is out of contract at the Blues at the end of the month, with a new deal not on the table. He will become PGS's first summer recruit, on a three-year deal, says the Le Parisian.Chelsea landed Bulka [about it], I'd nd before, and our team respoed to prise James Maddison away from Leicester City. The Norwegian has asked his scouts to keep tabs on Maddison, according to the London Evening Standard. The Foxes star has started this season just as well as last season, and Solskjaer is keen on addnded well,” Penn coach Rob Eiter said. “We were hoping . . . that this was kind of a weekend to make those adjustments from a tough couple weeks prior. The team responded very well, and overall, I’m very pleased with the results.”

Penn’s return to form started Friday night at the Palestra, where No. 17 sophomore Casey Kent and No. 12 junior Lorenzo Thomas helped lead the way to a 22-13 victory over Binghamton (3-8).

The dual remained close during the lighter bouts, with Penn (4-3) leading 10-6 after 157-pound sophomore Ray Bethea’s close 13-9 victory on the strength of five takedowns. Then the Red and Blue pulled away.

The 165-pound Kent forced a technical fall and picked up several backpoints to cruise to a 17-0 win that extended Penn’s lead from 10-6 to 15-6.

“Casey is about as rock solid as you’re going to get,” Eiter said. “He’s pretty methodical in his style of wrestling, and he just did an awesome job this weekend and the weekend before.”

At 184 pounds, Thomas notched two takedowns and added bonus points en route to a 14-4 decision that put Penn ahead, 22-6.

“[Thomas is] one of the anchors of the team, obviously nationally ranked,” Eiter said. “We’re looking for big points from him, and he delivered in both matches for us. Again, we totally look for him to score those points when we need them.”

Fast-forward to Sunday afternoon’s dual at Bucknell (5-7). The Bison took an early lead on the back of 125-pound sophomore Paul Petrov, who got a 14-4 decision. But Penn would rally back to a 24-13 victory. Although Sunday’s score was similar to Friday’s dual, Eiter believes his squad improved over the course of the weekend.

“Actually, I think we wrestled a little bit better today, and that’s what I had stressed, that we get a little bit better from Binghamton,” Eiter said. “There’s a couple of things we did since the Binghamton match so we could correct in a short amount of time. The majority of the team had made some corrections, and it showed in the matches today. They got a little bit better today.”

Freshman Ken Bade started Penn’s comeback by picking up six huge points at 133 pounds. Junior Jeff Canfora then increased the Quakers’ lead with a 12-4 win at 141 pounds — his sixth win in seven matches — that featured five takedowns.

As the dual moved on the heavier bouts, Kent, Thomas and Bethea helped Penn seal the win with 9-1, 16-2 and 9-5 wins, respectively. Thomas picked up his 16th win of the season, while Bethea notched his 14th victory of the season for the Red and Blue.

“[Bethea’s] a phenomenal athlete, and every day he’s learning a little bit more,” Eiter said. “Today he struggled a little bit — the kid wrestled him really good. Ray really had to work for his points, and hopefully he learns a little bit from this match.”

The Quakers will try to build on this weekend’s success as they return to action for an important dual with Army next Sunday at the Palestra.SEE ALSO

  • Penn sprint football seniors lead young team against Army

    content_img

Seniors are generally the foundation of varsity sports teams. But for Penn’s sprint football squad, they’re more like the mortar holding everyone together.

The sprint football seniors, all eight of them, will take to Franklin Field this Saturday to lead a very young Penn team (2-1, 1-1 CSFL) against undefeated Army (4-0, 3-0).

The leadership of the upperclassmen has been crucial this season for a team that has twice as many freshmen as seniors.

“More than ever it’s important for the seniors to set the example for these younger guys,” senior wide receiver Whit Shaw said.

The example the upperclassmen have set has been well received so far, as the Red and Blue have played all three games this season down to the wire and are riding a two-game winning streak.

“Each week we’re getting better,” coach Bill Wagner said. “Hopefully we’ve matured enough to eliminate those mistakes that can cost you, penalties and turnovers.”

For the upcoming clash with Army, however, the Quakers will need more than good ball security. The Black Knights’ offense has been on a roll, piling up over 48 points and 340 passing yards pe Rino Gattuso defended goalkeeper David Ospina after defeat to Lazio.Ciro Immobile caught Ospina in possession to score the late winner.“I did ask the team to play out from the back and use the goalkeeper as an extra pair of feet, so I cannot complr game.

“We’ll have to control the game somehow — the run game as well as the short passing game — to really burn up a lot of time and get into position to score,” Wagner said. “Defensively we’ve got to create some turnovers because I expect them to pass the ball 40-50 times from a no-huddle offense the whole game.”

That could pose a problem for Penn’s young defense that has shut down the ground game this season but struggled against air attacks, giving up over 240 passing yards a game.

“We’re going to have to bring the hit to them … step up our pass defense,” Shaw said. “Army’s been throwing five or six touchdown passes a game. We’re going to have to at least cut that in half.”

That effort starts with the seniors. They’ll need to be both good leaders and good players this weekend.

“It’s reUnited, who drew a blank in defeat at Bournemouth, are ready to make a move for 23-year-old RB Leipzig hit-man in the January transfer window in an effort to beat their Anfield rivals to one of Europe's most highly-rated finishers, says the Mirror.Weally important that our four senior captains step up and really have a great game to encourage the young kids,” Wagner said. “They need to show it not onlyortable 3-0 win over Norwich City.Diogo Jota made it five goals in three days with a brace against the Canaries, following up from hat-trick in Europa League.Raul Jimenez also got on the scoresheet as Wolves kept the pace with their top-four rivals.A on the field but they have to continue to support and encourage and keep that level of intensity up no matter what happens.”

Facing an older, more experienced Army team could be the Quakers’ Achilles heel, unless Penn’s upperclassmen can fuse this group together quickly.

“It takes every one of the seniors,” Shaw said.

Wagner is confident in his team’s abilities, despite its youth.

“We can beat this team,” he said. “We just have to play one of our best games.”

If the seniors can keep this team together until the end Saturday, the Black Knights may find themselves running into a brick wall.SEE ALSO

  • F. Hockey: Leopards fail to show their teeth, or a goal

    content_img

Penn goalkeeper Alanna Butera was flat on her back, the ball bouncing a few yards away from her, and the net was wide open. For the first time this season, it didn't matter.

The whistle after the loose ball signalled that possession was going the other way, and with little time left on the clock, the Quakers coasted to a 1-0 win over Lafayette last night at Franklin Field, their first of the year.

That turnover in the final moments capped off a rough game for the Leopards' Laura Fabian. No fewer than three times after intermission teammates launched long passes down the sidelines to her, only to see the ball trickle past her stick and out of bounds each time.

She didn't get overwhelmed with help from her teammates, either. Except for a 10-minute stretch early in the second half, the Quakers (1-4) won the possession war. They took eight shots on goal to the Leopards' one, despite Lafayette's four penalty corners. Penn had three.

"Obviously it was tough to get goals at both ends today," Lafayette coach Andrew Griffiths said.

Senior forward Kara Bolger, who scored Penn's only goal off a rebound in the first half, said the game was a tightly controlled affair, at least on the Quakers' end.

"There was so muovic. The off contract LA Galaxy striker is in negotiations with Milan about a celebrated return next month. But Monza chief Galliani told TMW: "Zlatan is a clever guy. "Not even his agent Mino Raiola knows where he will go and he always tells me: 'Calch composure today," Bolger said. "Nothing frantic. We didn't give up any stupid fouls, it was all really smart play, and I think that was really clear."

"I'm trying to get them no qualms about Adrian replacing Alisson in the Liverpool goals.Alisson injured his calf against Norwich City on Friday, with Jurgen Klopp confirming he will miss the next few weeks of action.Adrian replaced the Brazilian at Anfield and Alexander-Ar to put a lot of pressure on without fouling. Let them do the fouling; let us get the corners," Quakers coach Val Cloud said.

The Quakers now head into Cornell on Saturday with a win under their belts, even if it only came by a solitary goal. The Big Red are 1-0 in conference play and boast a plus-4 goal differential, the only Ivy team on the plus side in that category.

"What I liked about today was we were really working on getting the ball in the middle today, and we really did," Cloud said. "Maybe not as much as I had hoped, but much, much better."

The Leopards may have played hard, but playing smart was a different matter. Lafayette made a push in the final minutes, but wild passes and hasty decision-making didn't help the cause.

Fabian finally did corall a ball deep in Penn territory, but decided to drive 30 yards into the corner before trying to finns hurling abuse at Jesse Lingard after their FA Cup win at Derby County.Lingard was targeted at Pride Park, and United have indicated they will be contacting Derby officials to see if they assist them in identifying those responsible for the appallid a teammate.

For a brief moment, the game flashed before Cloud's eyes.

"Luckily for us," Cloud said, "she messed up."

  • Foil carries fencers at quad meet

    content_img

Before the season, head coach David Micahnik wondered whether the foil, which has been the Penn fencing team's perennial strength, would continue to carry the team.

At the Penn State Invitational on Saturday, however, Micahnik stopped wondering, as the foil lifted both the men's and women's teams to respectable performances.

In the four-team meet, the men's team lost only to the third-ranked Nittany Lions, and it defeated Haverford and sixth-ranked Saint John's.

The women experienced a bit more difficulty against these powerhouses, notching their sole victory against a weaker and more inexperienced Haverford team.

For the men, the impressive upset of the Red Storm was a testament to the emergence of the foil as the team's dominant weapon.

Overall, the Quakers posted a 14-13 victory over St. John's, while losing in both the epee and the sabre.

In the foil, All-American sophomore Ron Berkowsky remained undefeated for the season. He was helped in large part by the emergence of sophomore Corey Purcell. Purcell went 2-0 against the Red Storm and 3-0 against Penn State.

"This was a big jump for a guy who fenced part-time last season," Micahnik said of Purcell.

Given the epee team's inexperience and overall lack of depth, Purcell's breakthrough couldn't come at a better time for the Quakers.

Host Penn State's talented epee was too much for Penn to handle, as the Nittany Lions won 15-12.

The Quakers kept the score close by winning seven of the nine foil bouts, but Penn State won eight of nine in th's injury won't change their approach to signing Pablo Mari.A deal with Flamengo for Mari appears at deadlock after the Spanish defender returned to Rio yesterday following a Gunners medical.'Mustafi was stretchered off midway through the second halfe epee and five of nine in the sabre to seal the victory.

Haverford -- not nearly as strong as the other teams in the meet -- was unable to keep up with Penn's men and women.

Given the difficulty of their other competition, the women performed well on Saturday.

No. 2 Penn State's world-class sabre team took seven of nine bouts against the Quakers, leading the Nittany Lions to a 17-10 overall win.

All-American junior and captain Katelyn Sherry -- still recovering from a broken foot -- competed in the sabre in order to qualify for later events. However, she lost all of her bouts, as she was unable to move around on the floor.

Penn's epee and foil lost by only one bout each.

In the foil, freshman Abby Emerson has emerged as the top fencer, posting a winning record against tough competition throughout the day, while freshman Cassandra Partyka has excelled in the sabre.

The Red Storm -- composed heavily of international fencing stars -- cruised to an ord has given a brutal assessment of the past season. The England ace, 21, has revealed all about the topsy-turvy campaign.Speaking of the 2018-19 campaign, Rashhe five-time Ballon d'Or winner scored the 700th goal of his career and broke a new record. "The scales were tipped a good bit," Micahnik said of the competition. "We schedule these bouts because the teams are very good and challenging."

As Penn prepares for Ivy League competition next week, Micahnik feels that his team is primed for a strong run.

"We're pretty much on the track that we expected to be on," he said.

Micahnik also noted, however, that Harvard -- which beat Penn State -- will be a tough opponent.

"We have a very compact schedule, so we have to grow fast," Micahnik said. "But our team attitude and spirit are good, so we're going to be okay."

  • W. Lax heads to Happy Valley with win streak

    content_img

The Penn women's lacrosse team will look to continue its torrid play of late when the Quakers travel to Happy Valley to challenge a highly touted Penn State team today.

Penn has won its last three games by a combined score of 4Etienne Capoue.Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas is ready to back coach Rudi Garcia and spend big in the January market.Among the targets is a new midfield addition, which has led OL to Watford and Capoue. RMC says OL have approached Watford in recent2-10. The Quakers have improved their overall record to a respectable 5-7 and evened their Ivy League record at two.

The recent hot play has put Penn back into the race for the Ancient Eight title and the team, as well as its coaches, are citing the much improved first-half efforts as the reason for success.

"With all the games that we've won, we have done a really good job of playing our game in the first half," Penn coach Karin Brower said. "We didn't come out strong against Harvard. I think that we came into that game thinking we could win, and that won't be the case against Penn State. We need to have a strong first half. That will be a key."

The Red and Blue have also made drastic improvements with their shooting.

"I think we are taking better shots now than we were earlier in the season," senior co-captain Whitney Horton said. "It's improved a lot, and we just need to keep practicing."

Brower also applauded the recent work ethic of the players and the time they have spent practicing their shooting.

"There are definitely more kids that are working on [their shooting] and I'm glad that they are," Brower said. "It's really just a shame it took three quarters of the year to start to turn it around, but there has been definite improvement."

With an important league game scheduled for this weekend against the current Ivy top-seed Dartmouth -- the Big Green are 5-0 in Ivy play -- today's contest could easily be overlooked by the Penn team. However, the Quakers insist that their number one priority are the Nittany Lions.

"Even thoughed to be back for Manchester United's 1-0 win over Leicester City. The Brazilian replaced Nemanja Matic in the 67th minute at Old Trafford and put in an assured display alongside Scott McTominay at the base of United's midfield. And taking to Instagram this isn't a league game, we are all still looking at this as a big game," Horton said. "We see this game asnts to remain in the Premier League amid speculation linking him with Juventus. The Old Lady reportedly wants Sarri to replace their outgoing manager Max Allegri. The Italian has a proven pedigree in Serie A, but he says he wants to see out his contra a pretty intense local rivalry, and we really want to come out with a victory."

A focused and determined attitude will be necessary if the Quakers want to entertain thoughts of an upset against either team this week.

Penn State is currently ranked No. 10 in the nation by Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association and were recently handed a pair of one-goal losses, 15-14 and 11-10, by the two best teams in the nation, Loyola and Maryland, respectively.

If Penn wants to continue its current winning streak, the team will need solid efforts from all areas.

"Penn State is a very quick team, just like Dartmouth and Princeton, so we are going to have to slow them down, maybe drop our midfielders back," Brower said.

"We will also be facing much better goaltending over these next few games, but we need to just find open space and do the things that we have been doing. I think we can score on Penn State, and if we do, I think we have a good chance."

Also credit Pence for an excellent sliding grab earlier in the game.: Baker's first curious decision of the night -- to pull a dominant after just 88 pitches in favor of a pinch-hitter -- didn't haunt, as the game went 10 innings (and thus longer than Bailey would've pitched under any circumstances). But what about Baker's decision to pull closer after only one inning and just 15 pitches? The following inning, Jonathan Broxton, who, it goes without saying, is not the pitcher Chapman is, allowed the evenn president Silvio Berlusconi has hit out at plans for a new San Siro.Milan and Inter Milan have submitted joint-plans for a new, 60,000-seated stadium to replace San Siro, but Monza owner Berlusconi is appalled at the idea.“I'm absolutely against tual winning run to score. First, 's passed ball on a fairly routine inside fastball allowed to advance to third base, and then 's uncharacteristic error (on a tough hop, to be fair) allowed Posey to score and put the Giants up for good. : In Game 3 against the A's, the hits were hard to come by for . Still, Infante -- tasked with the important job of getting on base in front of and s -- was especially feckless: 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and a GIDP. Bold declaration: That's not good.

  • Yes, Melky’s quote was conciliatory, but it was a long time in coming

outfielder issued a seemingly very conciliatory and apologetic statement through the players union, which was an appropriate response after being caught cheating with a failed test for testosterone by Major League Baseball.

But that doesn't mean Cabrera and his representatives didn't originally contest or even fight the failed test, which occurred more than a month ago. While Cabrera didn't ultimately take the finding of a failure for testosterone to a hearing, he had to have challenged the findings at first. And for quite some time.

The timing tells you that much.

Cabrera was given credit today in some quarters for being appropriately remorseful with his short remarks. But it isn't like he didn't try to beat the rap. It's obvious he tried, and tried hard.

The evidence apparently was just too strong for Cabrera to take his case all the way to a hearing. There was the failed test, then there was the "B'' sample, confirming the failed test. And it was testosterone, hard stuff.

Whatever excuses or explanations were given, they just didn't add up to a chance to win at a hearing. The players union isn't shy about fighting in a hearing room for players who have any sort of chance or a case through a hearing, and it's done so 13 times, losing 12 straight times before eventually winning the case this past winter.

The union had no comment when asked about the process, the case of Cabrera, as it never does in these circumstances.

But the time told you he didn't exactly just fall on his sword.

There was plenty of time for explanations and excuses. But eventually all those were exhausted. And Cabrera simply had to face the reality that he had no case to take to a hearing.

So when he sounded fittingly remorseful in his response to the announcement of his 50-game suspension, those weren't anywhere near his first sentiments. Or his second, or even his third.

He did say on Wednesday in his statement issued through the union, "My positive test was the result of my use of a substance I should not have have used. I accept my suspenLondon. The Scotland international is a summer target for Arsenal. The Mirror says the Gunners are confident of landing Celtic left-back Tierney after bidding £15m plus a player, although that was rejected laughed off an online campaign to take him to PSG.Last week, PSG fans launched a campaign to tempt the Portugal international back to France with the hashtag 'PereiraAuPSG' on Twitter.Pereira wasn't aware of the push, though learned of it via RMC.He by Celtic as they hold out for closer to £25sion under the Joint Drug Program and I will try to move on with my life. There's no question the statement is a fair and reasonable response. But it took more than a month to get him to say it.
