  • Penn Athletics declines to further comment on Jerome Allen investigation

    content_img

The scope of the Jerome Allen scandal expanded last week when he testified that Ira Bowman, Allen's former assistant coach, had knowledge of the payments, but on the implications of the revelation.

Between 2013 and 2015, Allen, a former Penn men’s basketball coach and star player, in exchange for naming a prospective student a recruited athlete. Penn Associate Athletic Director of Administration and Strategic Communications Kevin Bonner declined to provide information on the timeline, scope, or details of the investigation, only providing a general statement.

“We were extremely disappointed to learn that Jerome Allen, former head men's basketball coach at Penn, accepted payments to recruit a potential student-athlete to Penn and concealed that conduct from the Athletic Department and University administration,” Bonner wrote on March 12.

“Until Jerome’s testimony last week, we also were unaware that former assistant men’s basketball coach Ira Bowman had any relevant knowledge of the matter. The University has been cooperating fully with the government and the NCAA so that the matter is appropriately redressed."

Bonner declined to expand on the statement to clarify what was meant by the phrases “cooperating fully” and “appropriately redressed."

Penn Athletics has not confirmed to The Daily Pennsylvanian if the Chuck Smrt investigation remains open or what its scope covered. On Oct. 8, Penn released a statement to the saying that the “independent review” was in its , but that they could not comment until “that process is finalized.”

“Penn thoroughly reviewed everything surrounding the situation, and as soon as we're at liberty to proceed forward, after that part of the trial at least, we will,” Athletics Director M. Grace Calhoun said .

“It really comes down to whether the school knew or should have known,” Miami-based collegiate sports lawyer said. “If they didn’t know and couldn’t have known and [Allen] really did a serious job of trying to conceal it, then the school’s culpability obviously goes down dramatically to the point where they might not even have an NCAA violation.

“It’s [a question of] how did it happen and did the school know about it. Someone in compliance: Should they or could they have done more?”

It remains unclear when Penn Athletics will release the findings of the investigation, which began three days after the allegations against Allen broke in July.

“[The investigation] could take a year; it could take less. It just depends on how much information they’re trying to obtain and how cooperative people are being, but these things do tend to take longer than you’d expect,” Setchen said.

There is a potential statute of limitations issue if the investigation takes that long. According to the , the typical statute of limitations for violations is four years, which for this case would be sometime in 2019. There is, however, an exception to the statute of limitations that may apply if the NCAA finds that the rules violation consisted of “a blatant disregard for certain fundamental rules (recruirs finished with nine men as they suffered a fifth defeat in sixth ahead of their Champions League semi-final second leg at Ajax.Heung-Min Son, back in the team after suspension, and Juan Foyth, just 135 seconds after coming on, both saw red at the Vting, extra benefits, academics, ethical conduct).”

On Wednesday, Bowman was suspended by his current school, Auburn, where he is currently an assistant coach. Bowman after being hired by Auburn in July, two weeks before allegations that Allen accepted bribes went public.

Bowman’s involvement came through Allen and involved both knowledge of and participation in the payments, reported. After Allen was fired in March 2015, he created an additional account for Esformes to wire money to and provided Bowman with a debit card to access the account.

“[The testimony that Bowman was involved] opens a whole new can of worms because there’s a new coaching administration involved. Now you have to go interview them,” Setchen said.ol.Now 22, Gomes left Villarreal for Liverpool at 16.He told Marca: "I did not agree with Villarreal to renew and the truth is that I always wanted to go to England. "And if it was also a club like Liverpool... It was an incredible experience."I talk

Neither the NCAA nor Ivy League have announced any investigation into the Allen scandal or any of the other bribery admission scandals that implicated Georgetown, Yale, and Stanford among other schools. If they an Smith recognises the pressure he feels being in charge at Villa Park.Smith is a lifelong Villa fan and knows the expectations around the club."Being a head coach or manager of Aston Villa, there is always going to be pressure there," he told Sky Sdo, it is possible that they would recommend sanctions against Penn men’s basketball, Penn Athletics, or both.

“There are clearly NCAA violations. There’s no doubt that the violation occurred,” Setchen said. “The question now would be what is [Penn's] culpability in that and what would be the penalty for it.”

  • Penn field hockey begins anew after significant roster shakeup

    content_img

Fresh off a second-place finish in the Ivy League a season ago, Penn field hockey is hoping to build on that success with another winning season in 2014.

Unfortunately for the Red and Blue, replicating last season’s success won’t be easy given the squad’s current roster.

Despite dropping a de-facto Ivy title game to then-defending national champions Princeton in November, the Quakers had many reasons to be optimistic entering 2014.

Penn put together its most successful season in recent memory last year, notching wins in 13 of its 17 matchups. Then-freshman attack Jasmine Cole led the Red and Blue throughout the season, scoring 18 goals to go along with three assists on her way to capturing Ivy League Rookie of the Year honors.

And with Cole and rising-seniors Emily Corcnited this week. While most of his team-mates reported for pre-season duty on Monday, Pogba is away from United's Carrington training base with the permission of manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - having been given time off after a hectic 16 months. The wooran — the Quakers second-leading scorer and assists leader in 2013 — and goalkeeper Carly Sokach seemingly set to return, along with six incoming freshmen, Penn had high hopes for the upcoming season.

But two weeks away from their season opener, as the Red and Blue welcome six freshmen to the roster, the Quakers will be forced to deal with the loss of significant depth from last year’s team.

While seniors Amelia Cohen, Katie Harrington, Sunny Stirewalt and Julie Tahan graduated in May, the program has also seen at least five players leave the team since the end of last season.

In uld be worth £100m-a-year to the club, it has been claimed. The agreement, which comes into effect from June 1 this year, is said to be worth around £30m-a-year, guaranteed, some £15m less than the bottom line earned from their successful agreementthe weeks following Penn’s loss to Princeton, Sokach, Allison Weisenfels, Camille Parry and Neela Mahanty all left the program. Several months later, Cole informed coach Colleen Fink of the her intention to transfer and has since enrolled at Rutgers.

The Quakers will be hard pressed to replace an offensive force like Cole. The Montclair, N.J., native led the Ancient Eight in goals and finished the season tied for the Ivy lead in points.

On the defensive end, Sokach’s prowess in goal will be deeply missed. The then-junior finished second in the Ivies with 121 saves and a .776 save percentage and was one of only three goalkeepers Mattia Caldara says he's determined to succeed with AC Milan. The 25-year-old has yet to play a Serie A game for the Rossoneri since his arrival from Juventus in the summer of 2018 due to first an Achilles problem and then an ACL injury. But Beppe Risin the conference to allow fewer than two goals against per contest.

The Quakers are hoping that the return of Corcoran, senior midfielder Alex Iqbal and sophomore attack Elise Tilton can offset some of the departures. In addition to the six freshmen, the Red and Blue also hope to benefit from the arrival of Claire Kneizys and Nicole Mackin, a duo that transferred to Penn from Columbia and Robert Morris, respectively.

Before kicking off Ivy play against Cornell on Sept. 20, the Quakers host four home nonconference games at Ellen Vagelos Field. Penn begins its season against Lehigh on Sept. 5.

  • NCAA spurns Field Hockey

    content_img

The Quakers sat in silence with coaches, friends and fans, their eyes glued to the television. In the next few moments, they would hear a list of the field hockey teams to participate in the NCAA Tournament later this month. The announcements began, starting with North Carolina and ending with defending champion Wake Forest. The team strained to hear the news they so desperately wanted to hear.

    News that would never come.

Some tears and hugs later, the Quakers (13-4, 6-1 Ivy) could finally step back and reflect on their completed 2004 season, as they gathered for dinner at Cavanaugh's Restaurant.

They had assembled to watch the selection show for this year's NCAA Field Hockey Tournament; however, being denied a chance at the national title did not detract from this season's overwhelming success.

"We came tonight knowing it was a slim chance," Penn coach Val Cloud said. "I can't say we were surprised."

Still, hopes ran hig Soccer Link reports PSG chief Leonardo has made an approach to Wolves for the Spanish winger. But he's been quickly frightened off by Wolves' asking price - a massive €100m.Leonardo is keen to bring Adama to Paris, but not at the valuation Wolves ah, especially among the seniors. Fearing the end of their field hockey careers, they watched their last season at Penn slip away.

But what a year it was.

"When we met before the season, we set a bunch of goals for ourselves," senior tri-captain Sara Shelley said. "We accomplished every one."

Aside from clinching a share of the Ivy League title with Harvard (11-6, 6-1), the Red and Blue also won their last eight games, seven of which were shutouts. On top of everything, they beat Princeton (7-10, 5-2), a feat they hadn't accomplished in 10 years.

"When [the seniors] were seniors in high school applying to Penn, we were eighth in the Ivy League and the only team to lose to Columbia," senior All-American Liz Lorelli said. "And now we are the best."

"Last year we were fifth in the Ivy League," Shelley said. "And that was considered a breakout season. I don't think that we ever thought we'd be 13-4 by our senior year."

Every Quakers player will receive her Ivy League title ring. Four ne revealed Kompany played a key part in luring him to City - and already misses him since he left to take up a player manager role back in their homeland.De Bruyne said: “I hope his career will be just as amazing at Anderlecht as it was at City. Iof the players were further honored with All-Ivy recognition.

Freshman defender Melissa Black was named Ivy Rookie of the Year, a title not received by a Penn player since 1985. As starting sweeper, Black played an integral role in the team's defense, which earned seven straight shutouts. Shuique Setien has risked the wrath of Gerard Pique by having the squad train in the RAIN yesterday.Setien has promised to take the squad he's inherited back to basics and this includes having his multi-millionaire players train in cold weather.AS repoe was named Ivy Rookie of the Week twice during the season. Black was also chosen for the All-Ivy second team.

Lorelli, sophomore goalie Liz Schlossberg and junior midfielder Lea Salese were all chosen for the first team.

Despite such honors, Cloud and others point to unity, not individual talent, as the team's biggest strength.

"We won the big games because the team won," Cloud said. "They played so well together. It takes a team to win, not any one individual."

"We set out our goals and got all of them," senior tri-captain Kate Murphy said. "But the great thing is that we did it with our best friends."

Perhaps the key to these friends' success is their ability to let loose and have fun.

"It's a self-proclaimed title, but we've got to be the happiest team," Shelley said.

Aside from support within the team, the players express great gratitude to the parents, friends, students and other athletes who crowded the sidelines on both home and foreign turf.

At the last game, "we had more fans than Princeton did," Cloud said. "The team really appreciated it. Knowing that everyone is behind them makes a big difference."

Wade gained notoriety recently as a former rugby star that clawed his way onto an NFL roster in 2019, with the odds of him landing on a 53-man roster being initially slim. That all changed once the preseason got in full swing, though, because Wade made his presence felt in a big way when the Bills took on the in early August.

, the odds of him having established his pro football potential flipped in his favor, but it ultimately wasn't enough. Wade was released by the Bills on Saturday ahead of the 4 p.m. EST deadline, joining a slew of others -- including McCoy -- as players looking for a new home.

  • Pro Bowl receiver reveals he wanted his team to go after Colin Kaepernick in 2017

    content_img

It's been since has been employed by an , but that's a number that would be much lower if one receiver had gotten his way back in 2017.

During , wide receiver revealed that he wanted his team to go after Kaepernick after went down Gamper Sports Centre this morning to take training.Valverde arrived at the training centre two hours before any members of his staff or players were seen.Mundo Deportivo says Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu will also be at the centre today and with a season-ending ACL injury two years ago.

At the time of Watson's Week 8 injury, the Texans were sitting at 3-4 and just one game out of first place in the AFC South. With the Texans still in contention for a division title, Hopkins was hoping his team would go after Kaeperick, but instead, they ended up signing T.J. Yates.

So how did Hopkins feel after the Texans took a pass on Kaepernick?

"I was upset," Hopkin said. "Everybody needed to give Kaep a look. He can help a team win. I've seen a lot of quarterbacks that's not as good as Kaep, but teams don't want the heat behind them."

After Yates was signed, Texans coach Bill O'Brien said the team had internal discussions about adding Kaepernick, but those discussions didn't go anywhere.

"These things are discussed basically daily, and it's ," O'Brien said in 2017, via ESPN.com. "Colin Kaepernick's a good football player [but he] hasn't played football in a while. But these things are discussed daily and they'll continue to be discussed."

At the time of Yates' signing, Kaepernick had only been out of football for eight months.

In the end, the Texans ended up moving forward with Yates and , and that decision definitely didn't pay off. With Watson out, those two combined to go 1-8 over the final nine weeks of the season.

Although Hopkins is more than happy ed team-mates after scoring a hat-trick in their 4-2 win at Burnley.Pulisic has endured a difficult start to life at Stamford Bridge after losing his place in the starting XI before being reinstated by Frank Lampard at Turf Moor."The first few monthsto have Watson as his quarterback, the receiver does still support Kaepernick. During the 2018 season, Hopkins wore a Kaepernick jersey before a game, something that he eventually took heat for on the internet.

"You get heat for being pictured, man. That's crazy," Hopkins said. "I like it when people show their true colors, though. Like, how do you get mad at somebody for wearing something that's peaceful?"

The 2017 season was a tumultuous one for Hopkins. Not only did he deal with Watson's injury, but he also almost skipped a game as a way to protest comments that Texans owner Bob McNair.

"We can't h Jagielka is set to depart the club after 12 years of service. The 36-year-old centre-back joined from Sheffield United in 2007 and has been a mainstay for the Goodison Park club.He has been club captain since 2013, when Phil Neville left."It's been have the inmates running the prison," McNair reportedly said at an NFL meeting during the height of the national anthem protests.

After Hopkins read about that quote, he immediately decided he wasn't going to be attending practice that day. As a matter of fact, Hopkins was so upset with the quote that he almost decided to skip the Texans' Week 8 game in Seattle.

"Hell yeah, I was about to sit out the game," Hopkins said. "But I definitely wasn't going to practice. A couple of my teammates about to follow me, but they called them back up to the stadium. They tried calling me, but I wasn't going back. Hell no."

Although Hopkins was upset at the time, he holds no ill will against McNair, who .

"It feels like I'm a slave again. Getting ran over. Listen to the master, go to work. But I took into consideration that he was older -- RIP, his soul," Hopkins said. "He was a good man, but some people they don't really… When you grow up certain places, you talk a certain way."

The only reason Hopkins ended up playing against the is because he didn't want to let his teammates down.

"I play for them," Hopkins said. "I don't play for nobody else but my teammates and my family. That's it."

Although Hopkins ended up playing in that Week 8 game, things didn't go so well for the Texans, because that ended up being the game .

Hopkins had a career-high 1,572 receiving yards last season in a year where Watson managed to stay healthy. If both players can stay healthy in 2019, they might become one of the most unstoppable QB-WR duos in the NFL.

  • Dak Prescott contract rumors: Jerry Jones walks back ‘imminent’ comment, Carson Palmer offers bad advice

    content_img

    , you're up.

from running back now in the rearview, fans of the are hellbent on now trying to figure out when Prescott and wide receiver will land their deals. The problem in doing so is clear, because whereas the two-time rushing champ was absent from work as he , both Prescott and Cooper were at work and have remained nonchalant about negotiations from minute one.

, and both are willing to bet on themselves in 2019 to potentially drive their asking price higher in 2020. That's not stopping the "we want it now" crowd, though, and owner Jerry Jones -- ever the savvy marketer in how he continues to keep the topic of his choosing atop the news feed -- is keeping them on the line much the same way he did with his sound bytes during Elliott's holdout.

It doesn't matter to him that the situations are wildly dissimilar, but only that you keep trying to figure ouaving a match early when he was caught on camera exiting the win over Leganes before the final whistle on Wednesday night. The Welshman was not part of Zinedine Zidane's match day squad but was in attendance to watch the action at the Bernabeu.Howevert what's going on, and then talking about it endlessly (and with mixed messages) until it's done.

Case in point, Jones said in his post-game address on Sunday -- of the -- that a new deal for the Pro Bowl quarterback was "imminent", and that stirred an already boiling pot. Those comments were walked back by team exec Stephen Jones just one day later on 105.3FM the Fan, noting the elder Jones may have a "different meaning" of the word "imminent", and that clarity on the statement would need to be sought with the one who said it.

And so it was, Jerry Jones was asked to clarify exactly where things are with Prescott, but he instead muddied the water further; and that's no accident.

"[Imminent] means ready to take place, close, near, about to happen -- those types of things," Jones said. "I think I said at our luncheon, that we had that I went even further and said at our luncheon Dak [Zeke] will be on the field when we open up. I thought that I really then had gotten out over my skis because, as I've said so many times, nothing happens until both parties decide that what they're seeing and it's time to go. Nothing ever.

"I was asked my opinion. I think that we are fast approaching an agreement. Then that's relative maybe to where we've been. On the other hand, that might be my opinion.

"It sure might not be Dak's opinion. When Dak expresses his opinion or his agent expresses their opinion, that may be different than my opinion. And, so, that can go on for a long time. So, when somebody asks your opinion on whether something's done that takes two to do it, they're speaking just from their perspective, and in my mind we were fast approaching a deal."

    OK then.

The reality of where things sit with Prescott are evident, in that both sides want to remain married for a long time to come. At this point, the biggest hurdle is likely the length of the coming deal and not so much the money, with the latter having been more easily framed by the deals on and -- with . Until Prescott is ready to put pen to paper, however, it doesn't matter how passionate the Cowboys get (and they are just that) about wooing him to his new deal.

There are still reasons Prescott could opt to wait, and that includes the aforementioned and at least one or two more, but ultimately this is a deal that could land anywhere between six minutes from now to six months from now. Anything the Hall of Fame owner says before then is of no consequence to the deal itself, but does ensure everyone keeps discussing it.

As far as Prescott's value goes, not everyone believes he should command top dollar.

One such person is former NFL quarterback , who also spoke with 105.3FM the Fan this week. Despite having watched Prescott's historic display against the Giants just two days prior, Palmer believes it should be more about helping the team manage the salary cap than landing a windfall contract.

"If I was him, I would do a between a 10 and 15 kind of number, and win a bunch of games and a bunch of Super Bowls, and make up that money he lost out on by not being one of the top two or three [highest-paid] guys in the league," Palmer said. "He'll make that back in endorsements tenfold. I think if he were willing to take a little bit of a price cut, it would enable the team to keep Cooper and continue to pay the guys around him, and continue to pay thrilled for his son after a move to Real Madrid was confirmed. The departing Flamengo attacker's transfer was announced this morning. Real are paying €30m in total for the 18 year-old.Reinier's father, Mauro Brasilia, is a former futsal star and ttheir offensive line. That is what really stirs the pot for them, is that offensive line. If you continuously draft guys like they have that end up being great players and then pay them and keep them around to protect you -- he'll win a bunch of football games.

"If I was him, I would not be asking for top money. If I was him, I'd be asking for a team-friendly deal."

    Full stop.

As a first-overall pick Palmer was never Prescott, and that extends to when it came time to begin negotiating his own deals.

Assuming Palmer meant Prescott should take a contract that pays him in the top-15 at the position, we'll work our way from there, and with the understanding that even that comment demands data to support it -- considering all current metrics point vehemently toward the contrary. There's also the matter of the source here, considering Palmer had already earned $107,627,242 before then convincing the to award him a three-year deal worth $49.5 million in 2014, and that was just two seasons after he forced his way out of Cincinnati and landing a four-year deal worth $43 million from the that he arguably failed to play up to.

Working backward, his deal with the Raiders came eight years after signing an extension with the that maxed his contract at the time at $118.75 million, and the structure of said contract made Palmer the highest-paid player in the NFL when the 2007 season rolled around -- besting even a still-primo Brett Favre at thhester United defender Harry Maguire says he can feel momentum is now with them facing Watford today.United have lost only once in ten — when a team of their kids went to Astana in the Europa League.Maguire said: “We definitely have some momentume time.

In 2016, Palmer then milked the Cardinals for a one-year extension worth $24.35 million, and at a time when the Cardinals were one of the most cap-poor teams in the league -- carrying an available cap space of only $4.73 million that year -- hardly giving them any sort of wiggle room that season once he signed his non-team-friendly paperwork.

This brought Palmer's career NFL earnings to $172,148,722 over the span of his time in pro football, with the following breakdown:

    TeamCash Earnings

    Bengals

    $84,627,242

    Raiders$15,000,000

    Cardinals

    $74,521,480

    [Per Spotrac]

It's also key to note that average annual salary in Palmer's NFL tenure isn't an apples-to-apples comparison to how things are in 2019 as the salary cap is exponentially higher, but in his time, he once sat upon the throne of highest-paid and ended his career with nearly $200 million in earnings. None of this is to say Palmer didn't earn it, but instead, it's to point at that if he justifiably believes he did; it's a bit disingenuous to then ask a former fourth-round compensatory pick who signed an initial and pre-negotiated rookie scale deal that maxed at $2.7 million to accept less money.

-- having actually gained a surplus in funds this season by extending , , and Ezekiel Elliott -- what Palmer is suggesting simply doesn't add up. The math is the math, and there's no getting around how it works in Prescott's favor, much like it did for Palmer in his heyday. That is unless he's forgotten, but it's safe to say his bank account hasn't.

Lastly, while there is no guarantee any player in the NFL will win a -- as Palmer knows firsthand, having never once played in the Super Bowl -- what can be guaranteed is the second and (maybe) third contract a player negotiates. Prescott has grossly outperformed both his draft status and subsequent NFL pay, and now it's time he gets his just dessert. There's more than enough pie to go around, even if Palmer's already full belly and Jones' negotiating tactics claim otherwise.

Palmer mentioned how well the Cowboys draft, and that's correct, along with how they'll need to pay the top guys who then perform after being drafted; which is also accurate. This also, however, disproves his own point because it's the ability to draft well that will also -- along with the aforementioned cap wealth -- keep talented satellite players on cost-efficient deals around to help support those atop the team's pay scale.

The math is the math and, simply put, that's science.

I called [Browns assistant general manager] Eliot [Wolf] and I sa't join the rest of his Real Madrid teammates in the team's pre-season preparations ahead of their tour in Canada.Instead, there was a total agreement between Real Madrid and Racing Santander for Zinedine Zidane's son, while Keylor Navas is expected id 'hey, this kid Damon Sheehy, man he ran fast.' He goes 'really?' I said 'yeah, he caught the ball well, I'm thinking we should bring him up.' And then I was like, well, maybe we'll wait, but then I thought about it and Eliot goes 'well let's just bring him in now.'"

He continued to impress during minicamp and into the preseason, returning a punt 86 yards for a score during Cleveland's win over the in their preseason opener.

Despite hOle Gunnar Solskjaer admits speaking with Jesse Lingard about his social media use.Lingard failed to register a single goal or assist in the Premier League in 2019, with the attacking midfielder having lost his England place as a result of his dip inis early success, Sheehy-Guiseppi was unable to land a spot on Cleveland's 53-man roster. "I had already had conversations with Andrew, so I was at peace with it, but I wish he could have done it his way," Brissett said. "That sucked as a teammate, to see that and feel the reaction he got from the fans for him. That hurt more than anything. It sucked. Especially a guy like that, who has done as much as he has done, and what he's been through, even before I got here."

Brissett, like many other players around the NFL, supported Luck's decision and understood the rationale behind it. The conversation between the two friends was private, but Luck was at peace with giving up on his NFL career.

"No question. He was like smiling at the end," Brissett said. "That's what helped me gain clarity and understand the situation, seeing him smile. I wish him the best. He knows that and we'll talk longer than the days of either of our football careers. You know, he seemed happy and that's all that really matters.

The Colts will now turn to Brissett as their starting quarterback for the foreseeable future. Brissett filled in for Luck once before, completing 58.8 percent of his passes in 2017 for 3,098 yards, 13 touchdowester United.Wan-Bissaka won the latest instalment of his personal duel with Raheem Sterling on Sunday, as United ran out 2-0 winners against Manchester City at Old Trafford. “I think that process has been going in the right direction," said Wan-Bins and seven interceptions for an 81.7 passer rating in 16 games, while being sacked a league-high 52 times.
