  • Why flatten Windows 8? Because Aero won’t run on a phone

Beta versions of Windows 8 this week , which Microsoft’s top user interface guy now calls "cheesy" and  "dated" though two weeks ago he apparently loved it. Developers are scratching their heads over this UI flatification of what’s supposed to become the world’s most popular operating system. But there’s no confusion at my house: Aero won’t run on a phone.Look at the . It lose this season. The legendary Gunners boss guided the north London club to Premier League glory in three seasons during his time in charge. The Frenchman told Omnisport: "At the moment you can't look too much at the position because the points diffeshows projected growth in Internet devices.  Keep in mind while reading this that a PC lasts at least three years, a phone lasts 18 months and nobody knows yet how long the average tablet will be around but I’ll guess two years.  Adding that knowledge to these sales projections and we can see that mobile devices (phones and tablets) have become the game in software and whoever has been shouting about that at Microsoft is finally being heard. This chart suggests that Microsoft’s OS and application dominance will quickly decline if they don’t get a whole lot luckier in phones and tablets. So Microsoft is going all-in on mobile and the bet-the-company way to do that is to make sure the Win8 kernel will run on all three platforms.  That’s a common code base from top to bottom, which should make Grand Theft Auto be an interesting phone experience, eh? But since phones still aren’t a match for desktop hardware, that means necessarily dumbing-down Windows a bit to help the merge to converge. You could run Ousmane Dembele. In an open letter posted to social media, Ela urged Dembele to start taking his career more seriously:"I write this letter because I went on Twitter during Barcelona vs Borussia Dortmund and found this tweet by Albert Owono tweet: "I Aero on an ARM-based smart phone, but you might not be able to run anything else. Or you could run Aero on your phone but with half the battery life. Not good. These beta versions are aimed mainly at developers, of course, and that’s the point: mobile development is now more important than desktop -- to evercontent_imgyone.Microsoft certainly expects (hopes) phone hardware to dramatically improve in the next few months. That’s a good bet. But it also suggests that Windows 8 Phone, if that’s what it is called, will run a lot better on expensive phones than it will on cheap ones. And that’s not a recipe for global domination. Microsoft’s answer, I’m guessing, will be subsidies to smart phone buyers like the $400 PC subsidies we saw in the early broadband era of the mid-1990s.As a good friend of mine likes to say who knows Microsoft very well, "the Devil always pays cash".Reprinted with permission has worked in and around the PC business for more than 30 years. • Six states use nearly half of all pirated software in the U.S.

Six U.S. states are responsible for nearly half of all the suspected cases of corporate software piracy, the Business Software Alliance reported on Wednesday. The BSA, which collects piracy tips from its online reporting forum nopiracy.org, and its 1-888-NO-PIRACY hotline, said 49.3% of the piracy reports it received in 2010 were about companies in California, Texas, Florida, New York, Illinois and Michigan."On the one hand, it is not surprising that the six states where we are seeing the most corporate software piracy are all among the largest in the country," said Jodie Kelley, BSA's Vice President of Anti-Piracy and General Counsel. "But the trend underscores how prevalent these harmful copyright violations are throughout the US economy." The results may not be so surprising to the BSA because all but one of the states included in the list (Michigan,) hfootball chief Dan Ashworth insists Alexis Mac Allister is in their long-term plans.Mac Allister has completed a season-long loan move to Argentinian giants Boca Juniors until 30th June 2020.The 20-year-old joined the Seagulls in January this year, bave been the same . "Though we would have expected higher piracy rates in 'bad economic times,' that hasn't always been the case and it would thus be an overstatement to suggest that businesses are more or less likely to use pirated software during tough economic times at this point."

  • MAGIX Music Maker 17 — Silver edition is free

When it comes to creating music with your computer, it can be difficult to know where to start. There is certainly no shortage of titles to choose from, but for anyone that isn't already an accomplished musician, the complexity of much of the music creation software that is available can be off-putting -- hefty price tags can often be an issue as well.  is a little different, in as much as it is not only incredibly easy to use, it is available completely free of charge. The Silver release of MAGIX music creation software is a somewhat cutdown version of the title's big brother. The number of audio channels you have available to work with has been reduced to four, and the number of samples included has Daily Star says the mega-rich Qatari owners of Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly on the verge of sealing a potential £120million takeover of Leeds United.Qatari Sports Investments (QSI) are closing in on a deal worth around £10million to secure aalso shrunk somewhat. In the free version of the program, there are only three musical styles to choose from when it comes to samples, and the range of instruments is far more restricted. If all of this sounds disappointing, think again. Like many of the programs from MAGIX, Music Maker Silver's appeal lies in its ease of use coupled with its surprising versatility and power. The program uses an interface that may appear familiar to anyone who has used sample and loop based music creation software in the past. Creating a track takes little more than dragging samples onto the various track of the timeline and arranging them as requires.Of course, things are a little more complicated than that in reality. If you would like to break away from the bundled samples, there is nothing to stop you from recording audio from other sources -- this could be a real instrument, a vocal track or an ambient sample recorded with a microphone. Part of the joy of working with MAGIX Music Maker Silver is that experimentation is encouraged. Once you have created something you like, why not try out a few special effects to see what else you can come up with? • Google shows off Android 2.0

During the keynote at Google I/O yesterday, Android Interface Toolkit Engineer Romain Guy provided a first look at three big developments in Google's open source mobile OS which will be part of the 2.0 update, codenamed "Donut."The first new feature Guy showed off was "Android Search," a universal search tool that allows contact information, applications, songs, and more in-phone content to be located in addition to content on the Web. It's not unlike the "Spotlight" feature that is included in the iPhone 3.0 update. The most recent and most-frequently searched terms come in a pre-populated list when Search is launched. "Every time I click a search result, the system remembers what I did with [it], and the more I use my device, the more it will know about me, about what I do, my common tasks," said Guy. Developers will be able to tie their applications into the search UI, and create results pertinent to users' interests based not only on prior browsing, but also upon their chosen applications. The second new feature acts as a ccontent_imgomplement to the Voice Recognition capabilities that came with the RC33 update last February, and adds Text-to-Speech (TTS) capabilities to Android. Guy showed off a modifiedEspanyol are interested in Watford boss Javi Gracia.Gracia is on the shortlist of managers being considered by Espanyol, says the Mirror.Espanyol are losing coach Rubi to Real Betis.Watford gaffer Gracia is highly regarded in Spain and was also said to be in the running for the Sevilla job.Espanyol reportedly have five names on their shortlist. version of the Translate app, which could speak the translated text in an appropriate accent. There was already a TTS library available for Android, developed by Google's TV Raman and Charles Chen (developer of Fire Vox, talking Firefox extension), but that is based upon a port of the eSpeak engine. The final new feature is a gesture upgrade that recognizes handwriting. In the contact list, for example, the user will be able to jump to a letter by drawing it on the screen, the same could be done in the phone's music library. These are only the first of hopefully many more upgrades to come when Android 2.0 is released, as Guy was ford defender Adrian Mariappa insists they didn't deserve their heavy 3-0 defeat to Burnley on Saturday. After losing Craig Dawson to injury just before the break, the game swung in the visitors' favour and Burnley scored three times to send Watford binclined to specify, "We care about the user experience, but we also care about the developer experience, and we hope that with those new APIs that we are introducing in Donut -- there will be more -- you are going to come up with awesome applications that will make Android a more exciting platform."

  • Parallels Desktop 6 promises better Windows experience on Mac

Parallels, makers of one of the most popular pieces of virtualization software for Mac OS X machines, has announced that the retail launch of Parallels Desktop 6 will be on September 14. This new version of Parallels Desktop promises to be faster, more tightly woven into OS X, and more powerful, with a total of 80 new or improved features.Parallels Desktop 6 uses a 64-bit engine, which the company claims helps it run 41% faster than the last version, and helps Windows start twice as fast as it does in rival VMware's Fusion 3.1 virtualization suite. Setting up virtual machines has also gotten much simpler in this version. Users can choose how they integrate their virtual machines into their desktop with a new virtual machine assistant. For example, virtual machines can run in their own dedicated window that looks like the OS' desktop, or they can run as a shell for individual pieces of software. Parallels has referred to these as "window mode" and "coherence mode." These options are now presented in a simpler fashion. Also, for Mac users unfamiliar with Windows controls, Mac command key shortcuts are now recognized in Windows when running in Parallels 6. Parallels Desktop 6 also establishes a sort of machine-agnostic user identity. That is to say, content saved under the Mac "username" directory (My Documents, My Music, etc.) are automatically funneled into their respective positions in Windows. Likewise, browser settings and bookmarks are shared between Windows and OS X. • Europe: Microsoft’s behavior has changed, interop docs already complete

In an historic, if muffled, admission that Microsoft has not only made progress in its compliance with European Commission directives but may have been making progress all along, the EC this morning, Brussels time, released a statement saying it no longer needs to directly monitor Microsoft's compliance with the terms of its 2004 Snt referee is bound to get some decisions wrong, even with the benefit of technology. But Klopp wants more correct decisions compared to what we are seeing at present in the Premier League. He told reporters at a UEFA coaches' conference in Nyon: "VAR tatement of Objections."In light of changes in Microsoft's behaviour, the increased opportunity for third parties to exercise their rights directly before national courts and experience gained since the adoption of the 2004 Decision," this morning's statement reads, "the Commission no longer requires a full time monitoring trustee to assess Microsoft's compliance. In future, the Commission intends to rely on the ad hoc assistance of technical consultants."Microsoft has an ongoing obligation to supply complete and accurate interoperability information as specified in the Commission's 2004 Microsoft Decision," the EC goes on. "However, given that the originor his old friend Frank Lampard after their 1-0 win at Ajax in the Champions League. The Blues battled to keep the Dutch side at bay for parts of the game, but they were also able to play their football and show offensive quality. They were the team thal set of interoperability information has already been documented by Microsoft, increased opportunities through private enforcement provisions in Microsoft's license agreements for third parties to exercise their rights directly before national courts, and experience gained since the adoption of the 2004 Decision, the nature of the technical assistance that the Commission requires is now of a more ad hoc character." Which means, the EC will accept some input from some folks from time to time. But it will release Prof. Neil Barrett, the independent security consultant who was appointed in 2005 to ensure compliance, and who was responsible for reviewing Microsoft's documentation of its interoperability protocols. The 2004 objection was about interoperability -- that Microsoft produced an operating system with the objective of enabling other parties to work with it, but without documenting its communications protocols to an extent that anyone (including, for example, a Linux producer) could produce software that communicates with it according to protocol over a network. It was that lack of specificity on Microsoft's part that set up a kind of artificial barrier between Windows networks and others. After the appointment of Prof. Barrett, the EC raised several objections in the intervening months about the interoperability documentation that Microsoft was producing: first, that there was not enough of it; then, there was too much of it that content_imgdidn't make any sense to Prof. Barrett; and later -- in the most surprising twist of all -- that it didn't seem to be relevant . This despite the fact that the same documentation, which was also being produced for the US Dept. of Justice in accordance with Microsoft's November 2001 settlement agreement, for the most part met with its approval. But today's statement from the Commission includes an extraordinary word, appearing in this phrase: "the original set of interoperability information has already been documented by Microsoft." This is the first official admission by the EC that not only has Microsoft apparently met its 2004 obligation, it did so at some time in the past. The EC said it may enlist the help of technical consultants through service contracts "from time to time" to check on the status of Microsoft's ongoing compliance. The 2004 Statement of Objections is a separate affair from the , which concerns the EC's objections to Microsoft continuing to bundle Internet Explorer with Windows. The Commission's decision to begin drawing down on the 2004 affair could conceivably give it an opportunity to reassemble its troops to fight on a new front (new for the EC, that is), in which case, the whole dreary mess over Microsoft obstructing Netscape could be dredged up again.10:15 am EST March 4, 2009 - This morning from its Brussels office, Microsoft released the following statement in response to the European Commission's decision: "We welcome the Commission's announcement. We remain committed to ensuring that Microsoft is in full compliance with European law and our obligations as established by the European Court of First Instance in its September 2007 ruling and we will continue to cooperate with the Commission and its experts."

For about 40 minutes starting at approximately 9:30 pm EST Thursday evening, by Betanews estimates, the main page of Microsoft's Bing Web site was inaccessible to users. In its place was a message filled with hexadecimal code, leading off with the message, "This isn't the page you wanted!"No kidding. But was Bing being hijacked? As Microsoft acknowledged this morning, its own administrators were responsible for the outage."The cause of the outage was a configuration change during some internal testing that had unfortunate and unintended consequences," read a blog post from Online Services Division Senior VP Satya Nadella. "As soon as the issue was detected, the change was rolledArsenal legend Thierry Henry has three offers to return to management.JDD says Henry is currently holidaying in the US and has an offer from the MLS and two from Europe. No names have been mentioned, though Henry has been linked with former club New Y back, which caused the site to return to normal behavior.
