  • Cristiano Ronaldo vs Lionel Messi Champions League final would be “perfect” says Steven Gerrard

Patriot games aside, Steven Gerrard has already set his heart on the Champions League final everyone wants to see. suffered a knee injury playing for Barcelona at the weekend that will keep him out of action for around seven weeks, while was thwarted in his pursuit of a 500th career goal by a rare case of Real Madrid’s Galacticos firing blanks. But , who admits Messi and Ronaldo were the only players who "scared" him because they were unstoppable, wants the ultimate El Clasico final at the San Siro in Milan next May. The former England captain believes we are witnessing an era comparable with Pele and Diego Maradona playing for bitter rivals and raising the bar to unprecedented heights. And after – three defeats out of four, with Chelsea the only winners in their opening group stage fixtures – Gerrard fears it may prove more than a blip for our crusaders in Europe. But if Premier League envoys on the continent come up short, Gerrard – now a pundit on BT Sport’s coverage of every game – already knows the final the whole world would like to watch. “We’re livingttacking options, Pedro's minders have made contact about re-signing their former winger. The Spanish veteran is off contract in June and also has offers from Vissel Kobe and Sevilla, but a return to Barca is favoured.Sport says Barca management consi in an era where Messi and Ronaldo are taking forward play to a level we’ve never seen before,” said the LA Galaxy midfielder. “Choosing between them is like having to choose between Pele and Maradona, because they are recording numbers that are incredible — more than 800 goals in club football between them alone. “Years ago, a striker who scored 30 goals in a season in all competitions was recognised a world-class player, but these two are doubling that. “To split them is almost impossible. "If I was forced to pick one, I would probably go for Messi but that’s only because he’s slightly more of a team player – he might just provide more assists or final passes, but it would be 51 to 49 per cent in my mind. If that. “We are all blessed that we are seeing these two in the same era. "They are the only two opponents I’ve been afraid of in my career, because they are the only two who have been operating on a different planet to everyone else. The reason I was scared of them is because they are deadly in the final third of the pitch. “To sum him up in one word, Messi is a genius with the ball at his feet. "You often have to make an impossible choice - either you have to foul him or acontent_imgccept he’s going to go past you, and he scores goals from all angles. “Ronaldo is deadly from set-pieces, deadly in the air, scores from long-range right down to the six-yard box and he’s got a physique to die for. “Although they are both out of this world as talents, they are different – and that’s why it’s so fascinating trying to split them. “Any manager in the world can set up his team to stop these two, and it might not be enough. With the right tactics, every other mere mortal can be stopped, but more often than not you can’t keep Messi made his second appearance of the seasonin the 4-0 win over Standard Liege on Thursday.Bellerin has returned from a knee injury he sustained in January and believes the experience improved him as a footballer. He told BT Sport: "It's one of the best or Ronaldo quiet. “I don’t think Messi has ever scored against Chelsea in the Champions League, and with a manager who is cagey enough to set his team up as a defensive unit they are probably the best-equipped English team to stop him right now. “We all want English clubs to do well. Dietmar Hamann says is the ideal man to transform Liverpool's fortunes and bring happiness back to Anfield - a place the German says has become "like a morgue". Klopp, 48, is the No.1 choice among the club's hierarchy According to Hamann, the man who likened his football philosophy to heavy metal is the ideal candidate and would be an inspired appointment. “He is the ideal candidate for the job. He is the one I would pick," said Hamann. “The expectations and the mood couldn't be any further down than it is at the momident Florentino Pérez is willing to hold fire on the future of coach Zinedine Zidane. It's been suggested Zidane will be sacked this week if Real, after defeat at Mallorca on Saturday, lose to Galatasaray in thes from AS Monaco. The Portuguese international was not a regular for the Saints under Ralph Hasenhuttl last term.Foot Mercatosays it appears that Soares may still have his work cut out to get a first team chance. The source believes that he could be te Champions League. But AS says Florentient at Anfield so it is a great time to come. Maybe it should have been done in the summer, but better late than never. is a working class club, a working class town, and you need somebody that the fans take to. It is very important at a club like Liverpool that the fans take to the manager." Meanwhile Hamann says he believes that the Reds’ transfer committee will NOT be a problem, despite mentions to the contrary. The winner says he believes such a structure is common place in Germany and that Klopp has already worked under a similar regime at his former club. “I think it’s a common theme in Germany” declared Hamann. “In for example he worked with Michael Zorc [sporting director] and Hans-Joachim Watzke [Chief executive]. These three would decide on players between them. “There was a story that the transfer committee could be a stumbling block, but it is exactly the opposite. “He has made it clear in the past that he doesn’t want to speak to agents, he doesn't want to deal with agents. He wants to concentrate on the football.” Klopp will arrive in England having left Die Borussen in May, following a seven-year spell featuring two Bundesliga titles. The 48-year-old is yet to experience working outside of Germany - having previously spent all his playing and coaching career with Mainz. Yet for Hamann, it is now a perfect time for him to be heading to England and Anfield. “I think its a good time to take over Liverpool, after only one league cup in nine years. “He managed the second biggest club in Germany and transformed them into a very successful club again. "I don't think he's got a problem to take on the challenge. He's been at a working class club before and I think that's important.” In recent years under the Fenway Sports Group, the Reds have made a noticeable change to their recruitment policy, looking for younger footballers who can grow and mature at the club - while also growing their value. The Reds have a number of promising young players, such as and According to Hamann, youngsters won’t be played for the sake of it - they’ll have to earn their spurs. “He got quite a few players involved from the youth team at Dortmund; the left back, Marcel Schmelzer, then Erik Durm, and he went and ended up being a World Cup winner. • Antonio Conte is getting plenty of credit but deserves MORE – as Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso show

Thursday will be the sixth anniversary of a pretty unremarkable FA Cup fourth-round replay at a sparsely populated DW Stadium. Only 7,515 people showed up to watch Owen Coyle’s Bolton Wanderers edge p says he will undergo a medical at Tottenham ahead of completing his £8.5m move from Leeds. The 18-year-old winger has been granted permission by the Championship club to speak with the Premier League giants. And the starlet will head to Spurs' Enfielast Wigan Athletic and Roberto Martinez, thanks to a second-half goal from Ivan Klasnic. It was a tough night for the immensely likecontent_imgable Sam Ricketts, who ruptured his Achilles trying to close down a Wigan substitute just before the hour-mark. That substitute was who had appeared as a 43rd-minute replacement for the injured Callum McManaman. The replacement for Ricketts was Fast forward to 2017 and that substitute combination is a key element to Chelsea’s inexorable progression towards the Premier League title, their worth encapsulated in the first goal against Arsenal last weekend. Moses with the cross, Alonso with the finish after Diego Costa’s header hit the bar. This hugely unlikely pairing, operating on opposite flanks, but in perfect tandem, is just one manifestation of Antonio Conte’s coaching brilliance. Conte is getting plentto stay. The 19-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and, although Solskjaer confirmed he had been offered a new deal, Chong had yet to sign it."There are players we want to get signed, of course," Solskjaer said. "And Tahith is a playy of credit, but probably deserves more. Look at the players he has improved. Considering their dismal campaign last season – they are currently 30 points better off than they were at the equivalent stage of 2015-16 – it is bound to look as though players have improved. But it is hard to remember Gary Cahill, who also played in that 2011 Wigan-Bolton game, by the way, performing with such authority for a long time. Even Thibaut Courtois appears to have benefited from his latest manager’s input. Eden Hazard, meanwhile, has responded to Conte’s carrot rather than Jose Mourinho’s stick. If he performs, Hazard can have the freedom of the park without fear of reprisal. It was a telling insight last week when Conte was talking about players being uneasy watching video re-runs of matches. The implication was that they feared the coach would simply point out mistakes. It took Conte a while to convince them constructive advice was the only thing he was looking to impart. When you are cruising at the top of a league, there is bound to be a feel-good factor at the training ground, but talk to any of the staff behind the scenes and only positive feedback is garnered. Conte’s general handling of Diego Costa has gone down well, the squad has bought into a stricter fitness regime and the extra tactical analysis has grown on them.
