  • Why Newcastle United will be gutted about Paul Pogba’s world record move to Man United

Newcastle United supporters have not had much to celebrate in recent years. Relegation, protests over club ownership, Suue qualification. The Sun says the players and boss Maurizio Sarri will NOT be given a bonus for qualifying for next season's Champions League. The Blues secured their spot at Europe's top table next season after dismantling Watford 3-0 at the weekend nderland fans gloating about staying up at the Geordies' expense… it's not been a great period for So it's odd to think that just 20 years ago, Newcastle were in the middle in perhaps the greatest era in the club's history. With Kevin Keegan at the helm, the mid-1990s were a glorious time for the men in black and white. "BUT WHAT HAS THIS GOT TO DO WITH PAUL POGBA?" we hear those of you who read the headline yell in despair. We're getting to that… In 1996 - at the peak of Keegan's time at Newcastle - the club made an astonishingly bold signing. For the then enormous sum of £15m, they bought from Blackburn. That £15m broke the world record for a transfer fee and made Shearer - who had just won the Golden Boot at Euro 96 - the world's costliest footballer… which is where Pogba comes in. Since the 1950s, the world transfer record has been held almost exclusively by Italian and Spanish clubs (as you can see in the timeline at the bottom of the page). In fact, until now, Newcastle's signing of Shearer represents the only time (in the modern era) that a British club has held the world record for the biggest transfer fee paid. Which means this guy… And these guys… Have just nicked a unique piece of history from the Geordies. Sorry, lads… Despite his legendary compatriots, Ronaldo was the first Brazilian tofeat to Newcastle United on Saturday.A series of upcoming games against fellow Champions League hopefuls like Arsenal, Leicester, Tottenham and Manchester United means Chelsea have some great opportunities to make up any lost ground against their riv break the record. • ‘I just want justice’: Chelsea new boy Antonio Rudiger speaks out on racist abuse he suffered in Serie A

Antonio Rudiger has had enough. Enough of football’s racists. Enough of being told to stay calm in the face of it and enough of the game’s inability to do anything about it. As a Roma player in Serie A, the Germany defender saw it, experienced it at the hands of Lazio fans and even from opposition players. English football may not be perfect but, having quit Italy for the Premier League, Chelsea’s new £34million defender has called for Serie A to clean up its act. “I just want justice.” he said. “I want FIFA or the FA in Italy just to suspend those people who do that. “It is not all the people in Italy who are like that. If we always talk about racism in Italy, people think that all Italians are racist people and it is not like that. “I just mean those specific people who do it. Those people need to be banned from the stadium or fined.” Rudiger spent just two years at Roma after joining from Stuttgart. In that time Italian football has suffered from a string of race-related incidents that have brought shame on their game. Last December following defeat in the derby weeks earlier. Earlier this year Pescara midfielder Sulley Muntari claimed “racism is everywhere” in Italy. He’d responded to being booked by a referee for complaining about being targeted by fans at Cagliari by walking off the pitch. Although the Italian FA have established their own anti-racism campaign, its own president, Carlo Tavecchio, was vilified in 2014 for describing black people as ‘banana eaters’. Rudiger was racially abused again this year by Lazio fans during an Italian Cup game. Althougcontent_imgh his team-mates have shown solidarity with him, the defender opened up on the frustration of having to cope with being demeaned on the pitch because of his colour. “You feel alone.” he said “People love to say ‘stay calm’ or ‘don’t do anything’. It is easy for you to say those things when you are not black and you never feel what it is like. “You cannot even put yourself in my position of how that feels. In that moment, it is like this. You are alone. “You have to be strong. But each human is different. Someone takes it and doesn’t react. Others react. I can understand both.” Rudiger - nicknamed Rudy by his new team-matorst of his career. While in charge of Bayern Munich, Guardiola suffered a 4-0 reverse to Real in the Champions League semifinal in 2014.He recalled to Post United: "The 0-4 with Bayern (was my most painful). • Leroy Sane’s penny dropping is like a second big January buy for Manchester City, says Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola has hailed the emergence of as being like a new signing for resurgent Manchester City. Sane has been one of ' most consistent performers in recent weeks, as Guardiola’s side have moved up to second in the Premier League and closed to within eight points of leaders Chelsea. The 21-year-old German joined from Schalke in his homeland for £37million last summer, but Guardiola claimed his superb form since the turn of the year has made him more like a January window addition. Sane set up Raheem Sterling for the opener in City’s on Monday and has three goals himself in his last six games, as well as contributing three assists. “The people say in the winter transfer window one guy arrived - Gabriel Jesus,” said Guardiola. “I think two arrived. “Leroy arrived a little bit scared. But, since the game against Arsenal [in mid-December, where he scored in a 2-1 City win], I think he made a click. “He showed us a lot of things. He is so fast, content_imghis intensity helps us a lot and he helps us defensively, too. And he’s only 21 years old. "I’m so happy for Manchester City, who will have a good player for the next few years.” The stats endorse Guardiola’s view. No City player has averaged more successful dribbles per 90 minutes than Sane, whose work-rate off the ball is equally impressive. He is top among their forwards for both ball recoveries (6.4 per 90 minutes) and tackles (2.2 per 90 minutes), making him an ideal candidate to carry out Guardiola’s high-pressing game. Sane also ranks top for sprints among Blues players this season, with 76 per 90 minutes — well clear of his team-mates and in the top 15 players in the whole Premier League. “That’s why we bought him,” said Guardiola. “He has a quality that is difficult to find. "Even without the ball, he’s getting better. “You don’t need to be a manager to realise his improvement - and it’s not just about his goals. He’s so aggressive when he doesn’t have it [the ball]. "Hopefully he can be stable and keep going.” Guardiola places huge demands on his attackers, as star striker Sergio Aguero — who has started City’s last three games on the bench — has learned to his cost. It is not enough for forwards to simply score goals for Guardiola. They need to be able to recover possession, close down opponents and work just as hard without the ball as they do with it at their feet. That is why it is such a blow for the manager to lose Jesus for much of the rest of the season. The 19-year-old forward's tireless running off the ball is as significant for the manager as his goal-scoring ability. It is why Jesus had made the starting place his ahead of Aguero since arriving from Brazil last month, and why Sane has now made himself indispensable. Sane, Jesus and 22-year-old Raheem Sterling represent the future of City’s attack, and are the reason why Aguero’s future beyond this season looks increasingly bleak. • Liverpool show grit and flair as Roberto Firmino’s header earns three points at West Brom

Successive victories at Stoke and West Brom will hardly rekindle memories of glory years. Yet they could prove a significant signpost on the route back to the Champions League as Reds climbed to third. Liverpool showed flair and no little grit to triumph at The Hawthorns for the club's first League win here since 2011. They were forced to dig deep in the closing stages as the hosts, safe from the drop, dispensed with any remaining caution. Albion even threw keeper Ben Foster up front at corners for an all-out assault. But the visitors held out thanks to some impressive goalkeeping from Simon Mignolet. Roberto Firmino's first half header for his 11 top-flight goal of the season proved decisive. It was the second time in a week the Brazilian had produced the winner after a crucial late strike at the Potters. Ironically it came from a free-kick after much of the talk had been about the Baggies scoring 18 times from set-pieces this season. Boss Klopp was thrilled as he clearly showed at the final whistle with his celebrations on the pitch as he congratulated all his players. But despite their positive start, the hosts nearly fell behind in the 15 minute. Firmino should have hit the target but dragged a low left-foot shot wide from Philippe Coutinho's pass after an error by Claudio Yacob. Robson-Kanu had another sight of goal in the 35 minute from Jake Livermore's defence-splitting pass but the Welsh international's finish was straight at Mignolet. Albion were made to pay seconds before the break when Lucas flicked on James Milner's free-kick for Firmino to head in. After the re-start Liverpool continued in the ascendancy to push for a second goal. Skipper Milner volleyed over Firmino's cross from the right when well placed. Ten minutes from time Liverpool were indebted to a fine stop from Mignolet who came running off his line to close down Phillips. Albion threw evercontent_imgything at the visitors in a frantic finale as keeper Foster even went up. Foster was then stranded upfield as Liverpool broke but sub Alberto Moreno tried his luck from distance and put his shot wide amid a breathless conclusion. • Everton “know we can beat Manchester City” says Leighton Baines before Capital One Cup semi decider

Leighton Baines is convinced can overcome the might of Manchester City to deliver a “massive” Wembley final. The Goodison hero knows few sides would relish the prospect of having to go to the Etihad in search of a result that will see them through a Capital One Cup semi-final second leg. City are overwhelming favourites to progress on Wednesday, but with the Merseyside club requiring just a draw to progress after following at Goodison, Baines insists the visit holds no fears for the Toffees. And after some disappointing results in recent weeks have incurred the wrath of frustrated fans and damaged their Premier League hopes in the process, knows a Wembley visit would offer a huge lift. He explained: “Getting to the final is massive for all of us. “It’s a tough semi to come through and you don’t always want to talk too much about what it might mean, because there is still a lot of work to do before then. “Blarly with Manchester United counterpart David De Gea.The pair are competing for the number one spot in Spain's national team. And Kepa says there is healthy competition with De Gea and former Spurs keeper Pau Lopez."There are three goalkeepers in theut the truth of it is, we know wecontent_img can beat Manchester City. “We have just beaten them in the first leg and and another result like that would see us through. So we have just got to match what we have done in our last couple of games against them and we will be in the final. "Of course, it is easier to say than do. “City are a top side, and I am sure they will come out fast and try to get a goal, but we will be prepared for that and we’re capable of scoring ourselves. We will be ready.” Left-back Baines, 31, admits results have not been good enough and seems to have trashed claims by manager Roberto Martinez that they can still aim for the top four. Stand-in skipper Gareth Barry admits those chances are now gone, but he believes this Cup visit to his previous club can resurrect their season – and give Everton impetus to aim for a Europa League place instead. Barry said: “We have big games coming up in cup competitions. We focus on a huge game against Manchester City and hopefully we can get the fans positive again and then return to the league. “The top four is going to be really tough – we are going to have to go on some sort of run to get there. “If we are going to set a target then the top six is more realistic. “There is still a lot of football to be played in the league but with the players we’ve got and the ability we havd Alisson Becker have raised the bar in the position. Most goalkeepers are judged solely on their shot stopping ability. However, Alisson and Ederson are known for their ability on the ball, as they are able to come out to stop counter attacks and can e, it means we can go on a run until the end of the season.” Who'll reach the Capital One Cup final1000+ VOTES SO FAR
