  • Ed Woodward has significantly improved Man United but will only inspire Chelsea to rise to the challenge

To be fair to he has played a blinder. He deserves to be pouring himself a large one after a whirlwind weekend of transfer business. He’ll be allowing himself a wry smile at the vines on Twitter with his face superimposed onto the Wolf of Wall Street, arms outstretched, milking the applause. The reason? Darmian, Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin. Three top players. Three exciting names to start the juices flowing for fans ahead of the new season. In total four signings already to change the face of the Old Trafford team and to banish the blues of Woodward’s previous failures in the transfer market. Depay in before the end of the season. Darmian - rather than Nathaniel Clyne - to show some thinking outside the box. who has won all there is to win and hungry to prove he can do it at the highest level. Woodward has even followed all that up, just for good measure, with a warning to Real Madrid that keeper is going nowhere unless a deal can be put in motion - with Sergio Ramos going the other way - today. There were United fans offering their firstborn up to United's executive vice-chairman in the early hours of Monday morning. One wag suggested on Twitter last night that, far from surrendering Ramos to Old Trafford, Real should be preparing a £150million bid for Woodward. Another claimed, that Woodward could probably persuade Zayn to rejoin One Direction right now. The Old Trafford supremo was trending overnight as kudos from around the world poured in for his success in giving Reds fans something to shout about again. had wanted the new signings in by today, in time for the club’s pre-season tour of the USA. Woodward has delivered. He isn't quite The Equalizer yet though. Yes, there is no doubt whatsoever that in 72 hours he has significantly improved the United team. Already there is excitement at the thought of a return to the days when the Reds carried all before them. But can they really start to think about action reeling in that cruised to such a bloodless Premier League victory back in May? will take centre stage next weekend as he takes his team on tour of the United States. While he will doubtless express respect for the resurgent Reds it is a fair bet that he will take great pleasure in saying no. He would have a point too. Even if United were to add from Aston Villa to their impressive sprivella admits he's using the FA Cup to show Liverpool fans what he can do.The midfielder featured again in yesterday's 2-2 draw at Shrewsbury Town. Before kickoff, the Spaniard said of the third round win over Everton: “It was a relief for me, persree you would surely still have an organised, efficient Chelsea team with the winning habit over a Reds side adapting to their new arrivals and Van Gaal’s philosophy. Mourinho’s men finished 17 points ahead of Van Gaal’s fourth-placed side last season. The Special One will buy again this summer to ensure there is no complacency within the ranks of his title winners. He will look, out in the States, to see which of his youngsters is showing the most desire to force their way into the first-team picture. And skipper back early from his holidays to get himself in shape for the new season, will also lead from the front in ensuring the established stars do not get ahead of themselves. Mourinho predicted, even before the last campaign had ended, that the Reds’ resurgence (Van Gaal did what he was brought in to do by leading them back into the Champions League) would see the transfer market “collapse like wall street”. Yet De Gea clearly does still want to replace go to Real Madrid, especially It means Chelsea will have the best keeper in this top flight in Thibaut Courtois - even if United prise Hugo Lloris away from Spurs. Stoke’s Asmir Begovic as Petr Cech's replacement will be an able no.2 at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea still have the most orgacontent_imgnised, settled defence too, having conceded just 32 goals last season. Van Gaal clearly does have qualityder Ilkay Gundogan was delighted to finish the Community Shield as winners.City beat Liverpool in a penalty shootout on Sunday.Gundogan, who scored the opening penalty in City's 5-4 shootout victory, came on as a 61st-minute replacement for David Sil in defence but they will once take time to gel. With Cesar Azpilicueta and Branislav Ivanovic either side of Gary Cahill and John Terry, Chelsea have four players who know each others’ game and how to put their bodies on the line. In front of them Nemanja Matic alongside Ramires is still a experienced screen of steel and craft. United fans are right to lick their lips at the idea of Schweinsteiger and Schneiderlin in tandem. They also have the intelligence of Daley Blind and the wrecking ball that is But Chelsea are keen on international midfielder And should they beat Manchester City and PSG to Paul Pogba - and they are far from out of that particular race - then Mourinho would be more than happy with his options in the centre of the park. As for their attacking options, Diego Costa will be a better player for his first campaign in English football. If he can smash 20 goals in a new league carrying a hamstring problem as he did for most of last season, imagine what the 26-year-old Spain striker will be like fully fit after a good rest and with his feet under the table. What Mourinho does with will be fascinating. The Chelsea boss’s motivation is obvious. He would take great delight in succeeding where Van Gaal failed last season while Falcao at anywhere near his best form is a fearsome prospect. And Chelsea's third-choice striker, Loic Remy, is still better than most clubs' first choices in the Premier League. In the trio behind the frontman, Player of the Year goes from strength to strength, Cesc Fabregas will only get better after making himself the assist king last season and Willian continues to be quick, dependable and decisive. To be fair to United, Depay and Juan Mata either side of Angel Di Maria (if he stays) with Wayne Rooney ahead of them isn’t too shabby. But then Van Gaal had three of those four players last season and only Rooney managed to get into double figures in the League with 12 goals. With and Javier Hernandez going, United are sure to bring in another forward. But even with a Harry Kane, a Benteke or a Gonzalo Higuain within their ranks, I’d still fancy Chelsea. As the debate raged regarding entertainment against efficiency last season, the Blues showed themselves to be decisive in getting the job done with games to spare. We may be in an entertainment industry but - as United showed themselves in reaching the top four - winning really is all that matters. There is so much more winning to come from Mourinho’s Chelsea team. Ironically a stronger United will bring it out of them. The Blues now have more of a challenge, a side to give them a far more sustained test. They will be motivated, too, to keep a reinforced with as their custodian at bay. City with adding vital pace and creativity will also be better. But with the Blues it is never about individuals, it is about the sum of the parts. That’s where Mourinho comes in. They have only just got started down at Stamford Bridge. Even with that money so well spent at Old Trafford, neither United nor anybody else can start thinking about knocking them off their perch just yet. "They'll need to hire some more midwives within nine months because there's going to be a lot of love made [in Barcelona] tonight,” said Gerard Pique after the game. A fantastic quote, but just one of a thousand shards of information, soundbites and stats flying around Camp Nou The kind of night where 90 minutes, 180 minutes after the final whistle you turn to a colleague and still neither of you can believe what has happened. “I said this was going to happen,” remarked a French journalist, who could. “French teams are like this.” I often feel lucky to be able to write about football for a living; being at Camp Nou for a game like this made me feel lucky just to be alive. This was a game for the history books, statistically the biggest comeback in Champions League (and European Cup history), but the way in which it was achieved makes it all the more remarkable. Manchester United, in this same stadium in 1999, produced two goals in stoppage time to turn around a 1-0 deficit against Bayern Munich. This felt more incredible content_imgbecause United just needed one to force extra-time. At 3-1 up in the 88th minute, needed THREE goals. The belief in the city started on Saturday when Barcelona beat Celta Vigo 5-0. Various banners were brought out at the end of the game, telling the players that the fans believed in the ‘remontada’, the comeback. By Tuesday and the pre-match press conferences, Luis Suarez and spoke with complete conviction about the team’s chances of coming back into the game. I have never seen the Barcelona coach so calm—he is usually on edge, easy to upset and uncomfortable when dealing with the media. The build-up to the game saw Camp Nou reach a noise level I haven’t felt in the three-and-a-half years I have been coming to games here—and asking a veteran of the trade, who has covered matches in Spain for close to two decades, he couldn’t either. Flags waved in all four stands, banners were shown in three of them, including a huge one reading “Everybody with the team”. And they were. Every interception, accurate pass and tackle was greeted with a roar, every PSG player with a barrage of whistles. And that was just in the first three minutes, before scored. After that it was magnified. As Barcelona scored their second and third goals, the atmosphere reached boiling point, but Edinson Cavani’s strike punctured the joy and for a 20 minute spell, the game seemed over. Even the fans, who had been relentless in their support, were silenced. Until whipped home his laser-guided free-kick in the 88th minute, when they started back up again. Alongside me in the press box were various members of PSG staff. Most seemed calm, one banged the table furiously after the Brazilian’s goal. I wondered what his problem was—it was just a consolation. But then Neymar scored again and the tension heightened. One of them could barely bring himself to watch—with good reason. When Sergi Roberto stabbed home the winner the stadium exploded, it felt like the place was shaking from the bottom up, and dozens of people splashed out over the pitch, running to the corners to celebrate. In the press box, hundreds of journalists tore their eyes away from the jubilant scenes and back to their reports, now outdated, reversed, totally wrong.
