  • Jamie Carragher slams selection of Alberto Moreno for Liverpool’s Premier League opener against Watford

Jamie Carragher was not happy to see Alberto Moreno lining up for his former side Liverpool on the opening weekend of the Premier League season. The Liverpool hero turned Sky Sports pundit has not been shy about criticising the Spanish left-back in the past, regularly sharinghis doubts over Moreno's defensive abilities. Back in September of last year, Carragher was already claiming Moreno's time was up at Liverpool. Back then, he said: "He (Klopp) obviously rates him (Milner) higher than Moreno. If you're a left back and the manager is playing a right midfielder ahead of you it probably tells you your time is up at the club." So perhaps it should come as no surprise that Carragher was unhappy about Jurgen Klopp picking the Spaniard for Liverpool's first game of the 2017/18 season. Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of the Reds' Premier League clash at Watford, the Champions League-winning defender was unimpressed by the idea that a good pre-season had been enough to get Moreno back into the starting XI. • 10 things we learned this Premier League weekend as Chelsea went 7 points clear at the top of the table

Arsenal's title hopes were left in tatters when they allowed to come from behind to win 2-1 on Sunday. The result leaves seven points clear of second-placed City in the standings following their 1-0 win at Crystal Palace. are now fourth, level on 34 points with Liverpool who have a chance to move into second when they face ninth-placed Everton in Monday Night Football. After nine big games for teams at both ends of the table, here are 10 things we learned the Premier League weekend... 1. Raheem Sterling has world-class potential Playing all across the frontline, Sterling was excellent against Watford in midweek and again here. He has clearly been earmarked by Guardiola as one of his 'projects' and has, in the main, responded the challenge. As his goal exemplified, most dangerous cucontent_imgtting in from the flank. 2. Sanchez might need a rest His pass for Theo Walcott’s goal was a pearler but there were one or two signs Alexis Sanchez - him with the unquenchable thirst for hard work - might benefit from a short break over the festive period. He lost out in a sprint against Aleksandar Kolarov and faded as the contest wore on. Mesut Ozil might use one as well. 3. Danny is England's Rose If Adam Lallana is seen as the best-performing English player right now then surely Rose is up alongside him. No player deserves to grab the headlines more. The Spurs left-back was his side’s best player here, driving forward to prompt attacks but with so much in the tank that he was able, easily, to track back to maintain his defensive priorities. It is easy to see why the likes of Manchester City looked long and hard at Rose before he committed himself to a new and improved deal at White Hart Lane. Rose has improved out of all recognition under Pochettino and his star is continuing to rise. 4. Ibrahimovic is still going strong at 35 and he has played in 25 of United's 27 matches this season, including tReal Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos is being urged to make up his mind on a move to North London. The Spaniard has offers from both Arsenal and Tottenham.Real are only willing to allow Ceballos to leave on a season-long loan.AS says the decision rests on the 23-year-old on who he wants to join.Los Blancos expect the situation to be resolved sometime this week.he Community Shield. He showed why Jose Mourinho cannot rest him by scoring twice to take his tally for the campaign to 16. He is bang in form and his double took his run to 10 in his last nine games. He also sails close to the wind and was booked for taking out Craig Dawson as they challenged for a high ball. 5. Diego Costa's fifth booking of the season was 84 days in the making, and rules him out of Chelsea's Boxing Day date with Bournemouth. How much his absence will affect the dynamic of Antonio Conte's side, or knock the leaders out of their stride, remains to be seen. After 10 games of monastic restraint, it was a return to Costa's darker side – but you can't keep a prolific goalscorer down for long, and a minute before the break he was back on the scoresheet. 6. David Moyes revealed he was lured to Sunderland by Ellis Short's false promises. But he also insists he isn't walking away from the challenge at the Stadium of Light which is getting tougher by the week. Not getting cash to strengthen his poor squad in January is a blow, but Moyes asked his players to “stick their chests out” and get on with the job. They've now won 4 of their last seven games. 7. Rodriguez to the rescue Where are the Saints goals going to come from? Bemoaned fans and press alike after Charlie Austin was ruled out for four months with a shoulder injury. Step forward Rodriguez, Claude Puel tentatively said, and it may have been a scrappy pinch off Steven Davis but he delivered. Over 53 hours Puel had been waiting for strikers Shane Long, Nathan Redmond and i.Roma will rival the Gunners for the Algerian international, who left Porto at the end of last season. But the Italian side will only bid for Brahimi if they are able to offload Stephan El Shaarawy to China, says Corriere dello Sport.Brahimi scored 5Rodriguez to fire. Help from around the pitch had been much needed as well, and although Bertrand is an unlikely netter, Saints sill take them from anywhere. Regular referee watchers cannot have failed to notice that the man who sent off Jamie Vardy was the same man who was criticised on Wednesday for failing to brandish a red card to Manchester United’s Marcos Rojo. Only Pawson will know what he was thinking at the moment he dismissed Vardy, but it is hard to imagine that the stick he received for only booking Rojo for his lunge on Wilfried Zaha was not somewhere in the back of his mind. Crystal Palace boss Alan Pardew made his feelings known loudly after the midweek game at Selhurst Park and Vardy might feel he was the unwitting victim. 9. Hammers and Hull need to hit the January sales West Ham and Hull also could not be separated in the summer when they competed to have the worse transfer window. The London club's scatter-gun approach to signing strikers left them with the loan deal for Simone Zaza, who is about to be returned to sender. Hull left it till the last week of the window before throwing money around. Both need to perform better in the more difficult winter window. A goalscorer or two would be good. 10. Is Gaston the man to keep Boro up? Gaston Ramirez could hold the key to Boro’s Premier League survival this season. Ramirez returned to Boro’s starting line-up at the Riverside today after missing the last two games with a foot injury. The 26-year-old forward has been a key man for Karanka after joining Boro permanently in the summer. Karanka had said he would only pick Ramirez if he was 100% fit – and the Uruguayan looked sharp as he pulled the strings for Boro during an impressive first half. He also set up de Roon’s second-half goal before being replaced by George Friend on the hour. No doubt he’ll be the first name on Karanka’s team sheet for Boro’s Boxing Day trip to Burnley.

has told his Leicester players to put their title bandwagon int see Ernesto Valverde sacked.Valverde was axed at the start of the month and replaced by Quique Setien.Font stated, "I know that the players didn't want Valverde anymore."The businessman admits he was happy Al Sadd coach Xavi turned down the job, "I o “turbo” to storm clear of their rivals. remain in pole position to finishcontent_img top with eight games remaining. Victory today at Crystal Palace would lift the Foxes eight points clear of second-placed Spurs, who host Bournemouth on Sunday. At the halfway stage of the season, City had 39 points and boss Ranieri targeted 40 more to better their first 19 matches and leave them on 79. But after six wins and a draw in their last eight games, Ranieri has revised his target upwards and is raising the bar for his impressive team. The Italian reflected: “I think we need a little more. We need extra. We have to put a turbo behind us and push a lot. “If we make 79 points I am happy because I said 39 in the first part of the season and 40 in the second so we improve, so I would be happy. “But if we can do something more I am happier.” Ranieri, 64, has managed numerous top clubs, including Chelsea, Inter Milan, Juventus and Monaco, but has never won a top-flight title before. Now the Holy Grail for him and for Leicester is looming on the horizon. In pictures - Leicester 1-0 Newcastle: “How much? It’s not possible to say how much - it’s my life,” said Ranieri, when asked what winning the title would mean. “But it’s important to be calm and to remember where we started at the beginning. “If you start and think Leiic. The 20-year-old was rewarded for breaking into the first-team this season with a brand new four-year contract. And Willock was quick to point out his dad's role in his career."It's no exaggeration to say that my dad gave me the type of work-rate thcester were a team who wanted to be saved and now we are doing something more, we are calm and it will reflect well. If you think something different we will make mistakes.” Ahead of today’s trip to Selhurst Park, Ranieri continues to stress the importance of City focusing on their next match and not the bigger picture. Leicester have blossomed this season with a superb team spirit and relaxed atmosphere which has enabled players to thrive despite the stakes. And Ranieri stressed the importance of: “To enjoy and to fight. If results are good, it’s good. “If not good, it doesn’t matter. We’ve done our job – to save the team. Now it’s to enjoy the match, make our fans proud – then we can do something more. “But not the nightmare, the obsession to make something different. No, continue - let’s play. “Of course, the more points you can make between you and second place and the less matches there are, it’s much better for us. “But we are not obsessed about this. We just want to play and to fight until the end.” Ranieri admits, however, he does sometimes dream about the prospect of Leicester playing in the next season. The Italian, who has vowed to stay at the King Power next term, added: “You can imagine our fans, it would be fantastic for us, the club for everyone. “Little Leicester against these big teams but just think for one second and then come back. “It would be a great achievement but I want to go back on my focus on Crystal Palace.” Do you expect Leicester to win the title now?500+ VOTES SO FAR

"We had this kind of poisoned gift of playing on the Monday. That creates a very difficult situation, but we want to try and qualify for the next round. We want to try. "(There is a) long time to go, almost a month, but we want to try, so we will play against Fenerbahce with a team with possibilities to beat Fenerbahce." Asked if he tried to get the Liverpool games moved back from Monday or whether that was impossible, he said: "I think it is impossible. "The poisoned gift is already there, so what can you do? We just have to play Monday, and then Thursday, and then Stamford Bridge on the Sunday. "But before that we have Stoke (this Sunday), so let us concentrate on Stoke because it is another poisoned giftnd under-21s was a positive for everyone at the club. The youngster got a chance to come off the bench for the under-21s against Slovenia in a friendly. He got on the scoresheet in the game, showing that he is not out of place at that level. And Howe w because Stoke is not what the table says. "The manager is very good, the players are good, the team is good, so when I look to the table, that's not Stoke's position. "I play against a good Stoke and not the Stoke is in that position in the table." • Chelsea’s Gary Cahill seeking repeat of 2012 Champions League magic ahead of latest PSG tie

Gary Cahill has been there, done it and has the very special memories of . So he more than anyone remains convinced that could yet salvage their season with success in . There are already parao Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen. The Dane's current deal is due to expire in June. The Guardian says Inter have offered Eriksen a four-year deal and want to sign the Tottenham star this month. The midfielder is out of contract in the summer andllels with the club’s top-flight frustration back then with manager Andre Villas-Boas' sacking mid-season and the club failing to make the top four. , however, was among a group of players to show their leadership as Chelsea defied the odds by winning European football’s elite competition under stand-in boss Roberto di Matteo. So despite their Tuesday night's meeting with Paris Saint-Germain - the side that - in the first leg of a last-16 tie, Cahill is quietly confident. “We have to prove that we’re a good team and good players on the biggest stage.” he said. “Everyone talks about wanting Champions League football and they want Champions League. “We’ve managed to get through the group and we are facing PSG. It’s massive. “We all realise, the players at the football club, that it’s a big competition and a big game. I had experience of going all the way and it lives with you for ever.” Guus Hiddink and his men warmed up nicely for the first leg in Paris with . Diego Costa, two-goal Pedro, Willian and substitute Bertrand Traore all scored to enjoy the perfect run-out. Captain John Terry’s experience could be missing in Paris though, after before half-time. But the skipper's centre-half partner Cahill also knows how to beat the French title holders, having been part of the side . “It’s teed up nicely for a third meeting.” he said. “This game always has pressure on it. We were top of the league last year but there is still massive pressure on these games. “You just get a feel of how big the game is. This season in the league has not gone to plan. We’ve got opportunities in the Champions League and FA Cup and we want to go as far as we can. “I remember thinking at the time that we’re going to have to win this to get back into the Champions League. I think it was about the next game and the next game. “We can’t look too far beyond because that’s where you slip up. Yotruggling to handle the pressure at the Nou Camp.Coutinho has not yet been able to find his best form since he signed for the Catalan club, and has even been subject to whistles from his own fans in recent times."Coutinho isn't handling the pressure u have to focus on the first game. It’s half a game [Tuesday's first leg]. “If we get a half-decent result over there - realising that they are 20-odd points clear in their league, waiting for this game to come around - then we are in good shape. “They are near enough done in their league, so they’re waiting for this game and we need to be aware of that and approach it in the right way.” An added incentive for Chelsea is the need to prove to prospective summer signings that they are not among the casualties of the Premier League’s new order. Tottenham and Leicester look as though they have their places in next season’s Champions League wrapped up. Both clubs could also strengthen further from the revenue they generate to keep the traditional big four with their noses pressed up against the glass. Cahill, however, believes Chelsea have nothing to prove and the club’s record shows that this season remains a temporary setback. He is also confident that the club will not struggle to hold on to their best players. Cahill said: “I think people are realising that, with the history of thecontent_img club of late, you can’t talk too soon. "You’d like to think this year is a slip-up in the league and that if we do not finish in the top four then next year will be totally different.” Who will go through to the last eight?2000+ VOTES SO FAR
