  • Just because: Lefty Grove’s throwing motion

    content_img

The superlative Lefty Grove stands as one of the most underrated pitchers of all-time. Sure, he'ley beyond January. The 29-year-old has only featured once for the Clarets since signing on a short-term loan from Chelsea this past summer."We haven't really seen him," said the Burnley boss. "Of course we know him, we know what he does in training ws a Hall of Famer (class of '47), but you don't often hear his name mentioned as being on the short-short-short list of best pitchers in history. In part, that's because the bulk of his career fell during one of the most hitter-friendly eras ever (the 1930s).

Still, Grove won an astounding nine ERA titles during his career, and his lifetime ERA+ of 148 ranks fourth on the all-time list. When you think of the best of the best, Grove should come to mind.

Competitive? That was Grove. Ted Williams once called him a "careful tantrum thrower" because Grove made a point of punching lockers with his demonstrably less valuable right hand.

Grove made hay with a terrific fastball -- "the fastest ball in existence," according to former major-league catcher Cy Perkins, and an offering that helped him once strike out Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Tony Lazzerri on a total of 10 pitches. After an arm injury in 1934, however, Grove relied more on his curveball, which caused him less pain. Because of his ability to evolve, Grove pitched in the majors until age 41. Of that evolution, Grove once said (source: ):

"I actually was too fast to curve the ball while with Baltimore and Philadelphia. The ball didn’t have enough time to break because I threw what passed tus.The former Ajax captain turned down Barcelona and PSG to sign for Juve. However, the defender has struggled for minutes so far this season. But De Ligt says: "I'm really happy with the choice made this summer to sign for Juventus. "Many changes hafor a curve as fast as I threw my fastball. I couldn’t get enough twist on it. … Now that I’m not so fast I can really break one off and my fastball looks faster than it is because it’s faster than the other stuff I throw. A pitcher has time enough to get smarter after he loses his speed."

"Too fast to curve the ball"!

Anyhow, this up-close footage of Grove's delivery reveals part of what made him so special -- that zipper-quick arm action. Dig it:

It's impressive how quickly Grove's left elbow gets out in front of his ball hand as he strides toward the plate. That's a good start toward throwing "the fastest ball in existence."

And here's a GIF ad rotation.Sarri admits he needs to juggle his players for today's game with Roma.He said, “It depends on the characteristics of the players. Paulo Dybala starts his runs a little deeper and Cristiano Ronaldo off centre. Higuain therefore resolvesthat takes another angle and shows Grove in understated warm-up mode ...

I'm no scout, but you see a couple of things here. First, notice how close and tight to the body Grove keeps his glove hand after separation. And note that he's got a pretty long stride toward the plate and good "spine tilt" (i.e., posture). Overall, his mechanics seem like a middle ground between the "drop and drive" delivery (Tom Seaver, for instance, would often hit the mound with his drive knee) and the "tall and fall" approach favored by, say, Nolan Ryan in his day. Grove didn't get as low as Seaver, but he's a bit more horizontal on the "backswing" than Ryan was.

The lesson? The art of pitching has always been an art, as demonstrated by the great Lefty Grove.

  • Rival GMs: Russell Martin erred not taking three-year Yankees bid

    content_img

    (Getty Images)

Russell Martin made a mistake when he turned down the Yankees'says he is "buzzing" for Frank Lampard and his budding young stars. The Blues are currently third with eight wins from 12 Premier League games, despite not being able to sign any players until 2020 due to a FIFA transfer ban.In just his first season i three-year offer this past spring, baseball insiders say.

The Yankees went against club policy, which is to wait for free agency to re-sign players, and instead offered Martin a three-year deal worth about $20 million as Martin headed into his walk year. However, talks broke apart, quite likely in part because that deal began to look low. The catching market improved markedly when Cardinals star Yadier Molina ster United over the summer as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer considered replacements for Inter Milan-bound Romelu Lukaku. But the Croatian didn't fit United's style of football, with Solskjaer keen on young players who could run at opposition defences as oppossigned a $75-million, five-year deal. Molina was also heading into his walk year.

Then Miguel Montero, the Diamondbacks star catcher, signed a $60-million, five year deal. Like the other two, Montero also was heading into his free-agent season.

While Martin is no Molina, $20 million or so looked light at that time compared to $75 million. Or even $60 million.

However, three rival GMs surveyed this week suggested they believe Martin may now have to settle for a one-year deal following a season in which he has struggled offensively. Martin has stepped it up lately and is up to .209, with 16 home runs, but the batting average would be a career low.

There is a paucity of quality catching so Martin could still surprise the GMs and squeeze out a multiyear deal, but their guess was that he'd likely wind up with a one-year deal, perhaps in the neighborhood of the $7.5 million he makes this year.

The Yankees have several good catching prospects, but offering Martin a three-year deal suggests they question how soon any of their prospects will be ready to step in. J.R. Murphy to bring David Moyes back to Goodison Park. After Marco Silva's sacking on Thursday, Moyes is being touted for an emotional return to the Toffees, where 11 years in charge before departing for Man Utd in 2013.And Osman thinks it would be a good appoiand Gary Sanchez are the best of the Yankees' catching kids. The Yankees still will be looking for a catcher. Perhaps they could re-sign Martin. but there's almost no chance they offer him the same deal again.

The beat the 6-0 Sunday, sending San Diego to its 11th loss in the last 13 games. The big story Sunday was throwing a shutout. Outfielder hit a two-run homer in the top of the seventh inning to give the Diamondbacks their fifth and sixth runs. Normally, that at-bat wouldn't really be much of a story. But the backstory, provided by D-Backs beat writer Nick Piecoro, does the job:

  • Steady White Sox taking advantage of summer Sale

    content_img

    (US Presswire)

LOS ANGELES -- He's all skin and bones, just 23, and he looks more like a guy who would show you around a college campus than a fire-breathing lefty pitching monster with the second-best ERA in the American League.Go ahead, get a good look.Because the next place you may see is pitching in next month's All-Star Game. Hey, sillier things have happened.Like. ..."Just watch that guy eat," reliever says. "I wish I had that metabolism."I eat a cookie, I gain a pound-and-a-half. He eats 10 cookies and doesn't gain an ounce."Sale stands 6-6, and a laughable 180 pounds. Maybe. That's how he's listed. Teammates guess 160, 170.They tease him by calling him "Flat Stanley." Or, "Slim Jim." You'd swear, even folded in half, he could fit through a mail slot. But step into that batter's box, and you wish the guy was giving you a college tour instead of unleashing a fastball that sizzles as whisks through the zone. That sizzle got away from him for one night Friday, when he helped blow a four-run lead against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers, turning it into a 7-6 White Sox loss. The cookie crumbled when the Dodgers slowed Sale's sails during a sixth-inning knockout as he uncharacteristically walked four in 5 2/3 innings."You get five runs off of a guy like that, the best in the league ... I've got to be better than that," Sale said afterward, bitterly. "That was a load of crap is what that was."It wasn't pretty, no.But it also was the first of 13 starts in which he's surrendered more than three earned runs. The guy is 5-0 with a 1.93 ERA and 49 strikeouts in his past six starts, including Friday's no-decision. For the season, he's 8-2 with a 2.46 ERA, second in the AL to the Angels' C.J. Wilson (2.30)."He's got all the attributes you'd want," Sox pitching coach Don Cooper says. "He's a competitor, he's tough, he's a fighter, he's got good stuff, good movement, he throws strikes, he changes speedwatch Valencia striker Maxi Gomez against Barcelona at the weekend. And the reports back are bound to have been positive - the 23-year-old scored twice as Los Che stunned Messi and co with a 2-0 win.Gomez, who is more likely not to arrive until the sus."About the only thing Sale doesn't do is wash Chicago's uniforms after he starts."He's got a good combination of power and a feel for strikes," Cooper continues. "Heck, he's always given me the impression, even when he first got here, that he's been around longer than he has."He's an old soul at 23. The Sox picked him in the first round of the 2010 draft (13th overall), and he was in the majors barely more than a month later. A grand total ojaer this season.United head to Chelsea tomorrow with Shaw acknowledging he and the rest of the squad have hung Solskjaer out to dry with woeful results which have left them languishing near mid-table.Shaw said: “We're all aware how the manager hasf 11 minor-league appearances and, voila. The plan always was to make him a starter, though his first 79 major-league appearances in '10 and '11 came in relief."He's a really strong competitor," Sox starter says. "Besides his natural, God-given ability, he knows how dominant he can be."I think being in the bullpen, working in the late innings, molded him to have that attitude."As general manager Kenny Williams seriously overhauled both the roster and the coaching staff in what many figured would be a rebuilding year for the White Sox, Sale moved into the rotation this spring and has looked very much at home ever since.Only question came in early May, after washed out as the White Sox closer and Sale let on that he was feeling soreness in his elbow. Hitting the pause button to make sure his elbow was sound, the Sox moved him to the bullpen. It lasted one appearance. Then Sale talked his way back into the rotation. What his old bullpen-mates saw during these few days didn't surprise them."He's an unbelievable competitor," Thornton says. "It takes quite a bit of backbone to stand up to the GM and the coaching staff. It wasn't like it was a big confrontation, but to say, 'No, I want to start' ... especially at that age."It's one thing for someone to do that who's a 30-year-old veteran."Sale's bullpen appearance came in one inning on May 8. He was back in the rotation on May 12 against Kansas City."A lot of it was in the terms used with what was going on," first-year manager Robin Ventura says. "We were reacting to alleviate that."During later conversations, Ventura says, "different words were used."That, combined with doctors' clearance, enabled Sale to win the debate. And beginning May 17, over a five-start span, he went 5-0 with an 0.98 ERA, 43 strikeouts and only seven walks. When he whiffed 15 Rays on May 28, he became the youngest pitcher to fan 15 or more since the Cubs' Mark Prior punched out 16 Brewers in 2003.His fastball normally is 94-96 m.p.h., and he can crank it up into the high 90s or even 100. He throws a terrific change-up and a slurve, and they all come from behind uncanny deception in his delivery."To me, those are attributes of the top guys," Cooper says. The Dodgers faced him once this spring, enough to know what they were getting into Friday."He's surprising because he's long and lanky, and it looks from that motion like he wouldn't be a starter," Dodgers manager Don Mattingly says. "But all of our guys were coming back to the dugout like, 'Ooooh!' They all came back talking."Thanks to leadoff man Dee Gordon and Jerry Hairston Jr., Friday they were walking. Two of the five runs they scored against Sale reached base via walks. Against the pitcher who led the AL in lowest bl keep improving after victory on Saturday against Crystal Palace.Second-half goals from Tammy Abraham, 22, and 21-year-old Christian Pulisic secured a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday. It was the Blues' sixth straight league victory and manageatting average against at .188, that was the opening the Dodgers needed.Competitive? You bet."That was everything this team did not need from me tonight," Sale said with disgust. But to this point, he's given them everything they've needed."That wasn't his best," Ventura said, "but it was still pretty good."
