  • With baseball and PEDs, a return to uncomfortable uncertainty

    content_img

    (US Presswire)

, you're doing it to us again.

LeavingHarry Arter is a step away from leaving Bournemouth.Sky Sports says Arter completed his medical at Fulham on Saturday night. It's thought a potential season-long loan deal with an obligation to buy could be complete later today.Arter spent last season on-loan with Cardiff City. us wondering. Leaving us asking questions.

Leaving us in that zone of uncertainty that we'd hoped we had left behind, when baseball and its players union finally stopped looking the other way on steroids.

Drug testing was supposed to clean up the game, but it was also supposed to give us clarity. It was supposed to give us trust that we could believe what we were watching.

    More on PEDsRelated links

Some players would fail tests, but they would be suspended and we would know who they were.

Now we're back to where we were before testing began. We're back with suspicions and reports.

For now, the star lives in that steroid gray area. Braun's defense then was based on problems with the chain of custody. Since the test itself was never challenged, many will always believe he cheated.

His National League MVP award from 2011 will forever be tainted, even though an arbitrator overruled his suspension for a failed test.

But what about 2012, when he basically duplicated his MVP numbers, finished second in the voting and passed all his drug tests? Now we're asking if that was real, or whether it was tainted, too? We're left wondering again, this time because Braun somehow . His name is in the records from Bosch's since-closed anti-aging clinic, as first reported by Yahoo Sports and later confirmed by CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman. The link isn't at level, because Braun's name doesn't have any specific drugs next to it, the way A-Rod's name does, the way 's name and 's name do. Braun's explanation, in was that his lawyers had consulted with Bosch, and that he never had any other relationship with Bosch.

Left unanswered is why Bosch -- an alleged PED distributor who ran an aging clinic -- was considered an expert on T/E ratios and tainted urine samples (which Braun said was the subject of the consultation).

is investigating, and you can bet they'd love to find something they can pin on Braun, just as they'd love to find something they can pin on A-Rod. MLB was openly upset with the arbitrator's decision on Braun last year, and there have long been questions about how truthful A-Rod was when MLB investigators spoke with him in 2009.

Besides, the pressure is on MLB now, even more than it's on A-Rod, Braun or any of the others.

The standard of proof is necessarily high. There's no way baseball can suspend Braun based only on what came out in the Yahoo report, and yet that report and have left the baseball public believing that the PED issue is alive and well.

There seems to be some confidence that they'll find more, that they'll find enough, based on what people in the game are saying privately. They'd better, because the risk is that they lose what remains of the public's trust.

MLB and its union believe they have pro sports' most thorough and effective testing system, and it's very possible that they do. There was never a chance that they could completely clea former Tenerife whiz is attracting interest from Tottenham, along with Atletico Madrid and Valencia.Asked if he will be staying, Perez told the Shields Gazette, "It's something I can't say right now. You can't guarantee it. We'll see. There will be n up the game, not when the potential rewards are so great that the incentive to cheat remains high.

They know and we know that testing can never stop all the cheaters. The testing improves all the time (big improvements are coming this season), but the big rewards ensure that some will always try to beat the newest tests -- and some will succeed.

Still, the testing made everyone -- players, executives and fans alike -- feel that we could trust most of what we saw. Some would try to cheat, but many would get caught and the risk of a suspension would keep many others from trying.

Now, once again, we're not so sure. Now, once again, we're back in that zone of uncertainty, less willing to trust that anyone is actually clean.

No, Ryan Braun, it's not all your fault. Perhaps you're not guilty of anything except having your lawyer associate with the wrong guy and offering an unsatisfying explanation.

But as we've seen so many times before, when the subject is PEDs, the court of public opinion can be unforgiving (and perhaps even unfair).

One big reason for testing is to move beyond that, to move to a time when the answers are more available and where we can belof Nathan Redmond. The winger suffered an injury against Fulham and will be absent for the coming games. But given the international break, it is possible he will only miss a couple of key Saints clashes.Hasenhuttl said of the star's fitness in his preieve with some certainty that any steroid taints are fully deserved.

In some ways, it was easier back when we knew nothing, or even when we knew very little. Not necessarily better, but easier.

Now it feels like it's getting tougher again. Now it feels like we're left asking, sometimes left guessing.

And often left hoping to find something we can really trust.

  • Hall of Fame ballot to further crowd in next several years

    content_img

    (Getty Images)

In addition to quite a stellar list of leftovers from the 2013 BBWAA Hall of Fame ballot -- which yielded zero inductees -- next season we'll see a pretty stacked group of first-year eligibles, headlined by what appear to be three first-ballot Hall of Famers in Greg Maddux, Frank Thomas and Tom Glavine, not to mention worthy-of-discussion Mike Mussina and Jeff Kent. But that's not where the crowding ends.

BBWAA Hall of Fame voting resultsRelated content

Glance ahead to the 2015 first-year eligibles. We'll certainly see debates on Gary Sheffield and John Smoltz for several different reasons, but I feel like Randy Johnson and Pedro Martinez are utter locks. I also worry that Martinez might be penalized for "only" winning 219 games. I hope not, because for a stretch of seven seasons (1997-2003, a ridiculous era for offense), Martinez was arguably the most dominant pitcher in baseball history, going 118-36 with a 2.20 ERA (213 ERA-plus!), 0.94 WHIP and an average of 252 strikeouts per season.

On the 2016 ballot, we'll first see Ken Griffey Jr. and Trevor Hoffman, who seem to be obvious Hall of Famers to me. They'll be joined by Jim Edmonds and Billy Wagner, among others. Then, on the 2017 ballot, we'll see Ivan Rodriguez, Vladimir Guerrero, Miguel Tejada (unless he makes the Royals this year), Jorge Posada and Manny Ramirez join the fray.

Further, let us realize that Chipper Jones has retired this offseason. So he'll join the ballot for the 2018 Hall of Fame class.

Considering we just witnessed Craig Biggio -- he of over 3,000 hits and the fifth-most doubles in history -- whiff on his first try, we know striker Francois Kamano.L'Equipe says Sevilla chief Monchi has stepped into the battle for Kamano, with talks underway with Bordeaux over a fee.Saints boss Ralph Hasenhuttl is eager to land a new striker and also has lodged a bid for Birmingham City the stanEmery says Arsenal's 1-1 draw with Manchester United was a fair result for both teams. The Gunners equalised through Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after Scott McTominay opened the scoring for the hosts.Neither side showed significant attacking prowess anddard is very high. Let's imagine that only Biggio, Maddux, Thomas, Glavine, Johnson, Martinez (Pedro, not Edgar) and Griffey get in before 2018. It's entirely possible only those guys get in, and I'm will hold out hope that at least these guys do -- otherwise it would be pretty ridiculous.

If this comes to fruition, here's the potential ballot in 2018:

Chipper Jones, Mark McGwire, Tim Raines, Edgar Martinez, Fred McGriff, Jeff Bagwell, Larry Walker, Rafael Palmeiro, Mike Piazza, Curt Schilling, Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Mike Mussina, Jeff Kent, John Smoltz, Gary Sheffield, Jim Edmonds, Trevor Hoffman, Billy Wagner, Ivan Rodriguez, Vladimir Guerrero, Jorge Posada and Manny Ramirez.

Remember, members of the BBWAA are only permitted to vote for a maximum of 10 players per ballot.

Jack Morris, Lee Smith, Alan Trammell and Don Mattingly will have fallen off the ballot by then due to their 15 years being expired. Even without those guys, that's 24 names listed above potentially on the 2018 ballot. I think, obviously, there's a way to separate out several of the names for different reasons, but Jong says the players are still adjusting after a midseason change of coach.Quique Setien has been in the job for a couple of weeks now, having succeeded Ernesto Valverde, and De Jong was asked to compare the two."There are differences," the Dutchmanwe can all agree that's awfully crowded.

For me personally, being a "Big Hall" guy and only penalizing those connected to PEDs who actually tested positive and served a suspension when testing was in place, the only ones from those 24 I wouldn't vote for would be Palmeiro (failed test, suspension), Edmonds (I feel like he falls short, statistically, upon only a cursory, initial glance), McGriff (falls short), Wagner (falls short), Posada (falls short) and Ramirez (failed test, suspension).

So I just said there are potentially 18 guys I'd support for candidacy in 2018. This is without deep research on Edmonds, Wagner and Posada where I may be persuaded into a "yes" and it's also assuming seven deserving players get in before then. Even if you disagree with my standard, and many do, that's an awfully crowded ballot in the near future.

  • Arizona owner Kendrick: ‘High likelihood’ OF Justin Upton stays with D-Backs

    content_img

has a 90 percent chance of being with the Diamondbacks when spring training starts as things stand now, one Diamondbacks person estimated.

Even so, the D-Backs are still open to listening to a deal for the multi-talented outfielder. So that percentage could change as the winter goes on.

While not putting a precise number of Upton's chances to stay a D-Back, club owner Ken Kendrick told CBSSports.com, "I think there's a very high likelihood Justin will be in our starting outfield when we start the new season."

The immediate chance to trade Upton -- who hit .280 with 17 home runs, 107 runs scored and 67 RBI in 2012 -- took a hit when the told at the general manager meetings that they wouldn't part with either top shortstop prospect or fine young shortstop in an Upton trade. GM Kevin Towers seeks a young shortstop and pitcher back in any potentiain the dressing room for over 40 minutes after their 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. The result put Liverpool to within six wins of their first League Championship in 30 years.City have accumulated the two highest points totals (100 and 98) in Englisl Upton deal.

There was talk Tampa Bay was involved in talks, too, but it's a little hardKarim Benzema has broken a major goalscoring record.Benzema is now the highest goalscoring Frenchman for one club.As Menes explained on Yahoo Sports: "There was an event that was a little unnoticed, that is, when Karim Benzema scored against Leganes,er to see the match there, as the don't have a young big-league-ready shortstop to trade and couldn't as easily absorb the $38 million to go on Upton's deal over the next three seasons.

Despite the seeming break in the trade action, Towers will listen if anyone comes to him with a realistic offer. Towers is one of the game's more prolific traders. But so far he hasn't heard what he wants to hear.

"Kevin is Kevin. I think there is no one on the roster Kevin wouldn't haute to his players after they secured LaLiga safety.Victory over Rayo Vallecano saw Valladolid safe for another year. The Brazilian superstar won two Ballon d'Or prizes and one European Golden Shoe over the course of his career, as well as two World Cve a discussion about, if asked,'' Kendrick said in explanation for why such a fine young player such as Upton seems to be on the trading block so much.

Towers has the keen ability to charm players, and so far, Upton, the discussion of trade talks a couple times before, hasn't given any public indication yet that he's wearying of all the rumors and discussion. But it is believed he is open to a trade perhaps even to a team on his no-trade list.

The list, which has been changed after each season, has been rejiggered to include and sources say, a seemingly smart move in this winter where the Blue Jays are stealing the show.If they had early interest, they have since traded their top young shortstop .

Towers has said a reason Upton has hit the trade market is the team's outfield depth, even after the trade of to . Upton has made two All-Star teams and received MVP votes twice but some rivals suspect the team was hoping for even more, either in terms of production or fan popularity (one rival said that despite Upton's fine production and nice-guy image, it is his impression the D-Backs do hope for a greater connection with the fans).

"I'm a big Justin fan,'' Kendrick said. "He was drafted 1-1, and the fan expectation was so extraordinary. I think the fan base has seen flashes of an extraordinary talent. Justin's still young. All of us as young people aren't as consistent with what we do until we become a little more mature. Justin suffers from very high expectations. But he's had extraordinary success. And I think he has a lot more to contribute.''

Upton is still only 25, and it's clear Kendrick has done some research to try to understand what's realistic. Kendrick said he hesitated to invoke the name of an all-time great as a comp, but he did.

"When compared to Bonds at the same age,'' Kendrick said, meaning Barry. "[Upton's] numbers are superior at the same age.''

Kendrick pointed out, "Even  before the allegations, Bonds was an extraordinary player.''

But while Upton has no knocks against him, his early production and pristine rep hasn't yet translated into wild fan zeal. But, as Kendrick pointed out, "He's a hard worker, a good person with a good family.''

Some wonder whether the Diamondbacks of their fans want their best player to exude a little more grit, to be more like his manager Kirk Gibson. "It's ironic, Gibby sees a whole lot of himself in Justin,'' Kendrick said. "Gibby's reputation wasn't always what it became.''

Kendrick sees "potential superstar'' when he sees Upton. The question is whether it will come in Arizona, or elsewhere.
